A man who died in a New Year’s Eve crash at a Salford roundabout has been named as Michael Page. The tragedy happened on Cadishead Way, a main road through Irlam and Cadishead, at around 7.15am this morning (December 31).

A woman, 50, was left seriously injured in the crash, Greater Manchester Police said. She remains in hospital in a critical condition.

A large cordon remained in place on Cadishead Way by the afternoon as investigation work was carried out. Pictures showed a police tent in place.

A witness to the crash spoke of the moment he desperately tried to pull the victims from the wreckage of a car. The man, who asked not to be named, said: “I witnessed this on my way to work. It really didn’t look good. I tried to get them out.”

The man said he saw the car being driven ‘straight into the roundabout’, hitting a tree in the centre. The vehicle, he added, landed on its roof following the crash, coming to a stop on the other side of the roundabout.

“I tried my best to get people out, but the car was just a wreck,” he added. A police officer described the crash as ‘one of the worst’ road traffic collisions he had ever seen.
