Pepper spray was allegedly used in a large brawl on Stapleton Road over the weekend.
Police are appealing for witnesses after the early hours altercation involving a large group of people in Easton, East Bristol.
Officers were called to Stapleton Road at 1.35am on Sunday (January 4) to reports of disorder involving an estimated 20 to 40 people.
Avon and Somerset Police said it was reported that pepper spray had been used by one of the people involved but that no member of the public or police officer sustained any serious injuries.
The force said a 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and assault with intent to resist arrest. He remains in police custody.
An investigation is now underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officers have been reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses while extra patrols were carried out in the area by neighbourhood officers on Sunday.
