A man has appeared in court charged with absconding from an open prison on New Year’s Day.

Aaron Thomas was arrested in Bristol on Saturday, after leaving HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire on Thursday and allegedly failing to return alongside two other prisoners.

Thomas later attended the Bristol Royal Infirmary before voluntarily handing himself in to police for arrest, Bristol Magistrates’ Court was told earlier.

The 39-year-old, officially charged with escaping from lawful custody, appeared at court wearing dark prescription glasses, grey tracksuit trousers, a grey T-shirt and a dark grey fleece with a shaved head and beard. He made no plea.
