FC Koln vice-president Ulf Sobek has hinted they’re willing to wait as long as possible to sign Sebastiaan Bornauw from Leeds United this month.
Express have an interview with the Koln director from their training camp ahead of the Bundesliga’s return. He was asked directly about their plans for the January transfer window.
The German side have been busy in the market already. They’ve already wrapped up a loan deal for Manchester City youngster Jahmai Simpson-Pusey. He is unlikely to be the only addition, though.
Koln have something of a defensive crisis on their hands and need additions, particularly at centre-back. Pusey has been added to help that, but they’ve also been linked with a move for Leeds defender Sebastian Bornauuw.
He played for the club in the past and is believed to be looking to leave Leeds this month in search of playing time. He’d spent most of the season out of Daniel Farke’s side before recently returning in place of the injured Joe Rodon. He was back on the bench for the defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday.
It’s a situation the defender is not happy about, with reports in Belgium even speculating that his return to the team may not be in his best interests.
Patience for Leeds United player
A return to Koln has been mooted, and it seems Sobek is willing to wait as long as possible to get such deals over the line.
“I don’t expect us to pull any more players out of the hat before the Heidenheim match,” he said.
“It’s incredibly difficult to bring in players in the winter. However, we still have until the end of January to act. Often, options arise then that aren’t currently available.
“Whether the needs will be met by then is a decision for the coach and the sporting director. I hope that we will have achieved some positive results by then. In any case, we should express our confidence in the lads who are here.”
