UK tourists in France have been forced to obey a “mandatory” rule if they are heading out in their car. British holidaymakers venturing over the Channel to the European Union holiday hotspot this summer have been warned to take note.

Millions of Britons are expected to travel to Europe over the coming months – and the warning doesn’t just impact those heading to Northern France, or Paris, or the Cote D’Azur. Instead, it affects anyone visiting Italy and Spain too.

In the likes of France, Italy and Spain, it’s also mandatory to carry a high-vis jacket in your car, experts have said. And Cherie Carter, Director at Indigo Car Hire, said: “It’s surprisingly common to see drivers with out-of-date licences.

“If you think about how rarely you use your licence. Just like passports, they will expire after 10 years. To avoid any mishaps before you even pick the car up, make sure that everything is in order with the DVLA.”

Carter added: “Depending on the location and type of debit card, it is sometimes possible to go down this route. Do your research and look for pages where you can hire with a debit card.”

“If you’ve endured a long flight, or don’t feel comfortable leaving a busy city centre airport, you can also look for options where the hire car is delivered to your door,” Carter advised.

She said: “In most of Europe, it’s also mandatory to carry a warning triangle in your vehicle. This is to alert other drivers that there is a potential hazard approaching, for example, if you happen to break down or need to change a tyre.”

The warning comes as the big spring and summer getaway kicks off, with the first of two Bank Holiday weekends set to fall this weekend.

Birmingham is a hub of activity when it comes to holidaymakers jetting off, with the airport operating flights to Spain, France and Italy and beyond.

Destinations from Birmingham to France include Nice, while Spain destinations include Seville, Girona, Santander and more.

Jet2, Ryanair and Easyjet are just three of the travel operators and airlines taking holidaymakers away from Brum to the continent.
