SIR RODNEYREDBLOOD had been spoiling his chances by pulling too hard, but, with the cheekpieces removed, he settled better here on Thursday and that helped him to land a six-furlong handicap. He readily drew four and a quarter lengths clear after leading on the bridle over two furlongs out and looks capable of following up under a 4 lb penalty here, with the drop back to five furlongs not a problem for this five-time course-and-distance winner.
Forest Gunner needs to bounce back from some disappointing efforts, but has the ability to make an impact off this lowly mark and could give the selection most to do.
WAISTCOAT was disappointing over a mile at Kempton on his penultimate start, but he bounced back to form when only narrowly denied in a seven-furlong handicap at the same venue last month. He found only one starting out for a new stable too strong on that occasion and looks likely to give another good account off this 2 lb higher mark.
He drops back in trip to six furlongs here but it’s worth noting that all three of his wins have been achieved at this trip. Middleton View made a winning start for Stuart Williams over five furlongs here last month and could still have a bit more to offer for this yard.
SERAPHIC bounced back to form when third over nine and a half furlongs at Wolverhampton last month and then ran even better when only narrowly denied over the same course and distance nine days ago.
Despite again failing to fully settle, Seraphic launched a bold bid and, after hitting the front early in the straight, was only collared close home by a rival who has won again since. Seraphic is only 1 lb higher here and should give another good account. Enthused had been struggling but took a step back in the right direction when third at Lingfield last time and could be the main danger.
KNIGHT OF MAGIC has been kept busy but finally got off the mark in a classified stakes at Southwell on Tuesday. He again failed to settle, even in a well-run race, but was still able to draw clear of some modest rivals inside the final couple of furlongs to score by three and three-quarter lengths.
He’s the one to beat in a similar event here, with the drop back in trip not a problem for a strong traveller with form around this distance. Marinakis was disappointing on his return at Southwell last week, but is entitled to a strip fitter for the outing and could provide the main threat to the selection.
CHERRY COBBLER ran creditably when sixth in the competitive and valuable Timeform Sprint Series Final at this venue last month, sticking to his task but lacking the pace to make a telling impact in that six-furlong handicap. He doesn’t have many miles on the clock and could still do better, with this step up to seven furlongs potentially helping to bring about some improvement.
North View failed to win last year but ran one of his best races of the campaign when last seen finishing runner-up at Lingfield in October. He has joined Cherry Cobbler’s trainer, Stuart Williams, and forms part of a strong challenge for the yard.
SECRET ROAD was disappointing on his first start for James Owen but took a big step forward when only narrowly denied at Southwell last week and has since registered a quickfire double. He is thriving at present and will look the one to beat under a double penalty if turned out again 24 hours after his win at Lingfield.
Global Warning is lurking on a handy mark and shaped well when fifth at Lingfield last month, running on well after meeting some trouble in running. He could be the one to benefit if Secret Road doesn’t take his chance.
GALAXY WONDER shaped with plenty of encouragement when third in a seven-furlong handicap at Kempton last month on his first start for Tony Carroll, coming from further back than ideal and finishing strongly over a trip short of his best.
He then built on that to grab a share of the spoils over nine and a half furlongs at Wolverhampton last time, looking unlucky not to get the outright verdict as he was thwarted by an unfortunate bob on the line. He could still do better for the Carroll stable and a 6 lb higher mark should not prevent him from going well again.
