Gerhard Struber says Delano Burgzorg is one of a number of strikers that Bristol City are exploring the possibility of signing this month.

The Middlesbrough forward is the subject of interest from the Robins during the January transfer window, with Boro open to letting him leave as they look to trim their squad.

Boro have already added forward Leo Castledine from Chelsea and are still hoping to complete more additions to their squad before the window shuts at the start of next month.

But to do so they will have to move players on, with a need to balance squad numbers as well as the books financially. They entered the month with a maximum 25 players registered with the EFL, though Castledine is an under-21 player and therefore won’t need to be added to the list.

Despite the interest in Burgzorg, he was still involved on Saturday as Boro exited the FA Cup at Fulham. He came off the bench for the final 30 minutes but had limited impact as the Cottagers’ own changes turned the game in their favour.

Asked about their interest in the forward, Bristol City boss Struber told our sister site Bristol Live: “I don’t read so much from the media. We speak at the moment with [and] we are in touch with more strikers at the moment.

“But this must be, in the end, a striker [who] is super convinced to be here, and he must be, in the end, a striker who can help the team techincal-tactical-wise, but also mental-wise.

“We are here in exchange with more strikers, and we will see which one decides to jump here and in which direction we decide to bring someone in.”

Struber did go on to suggest that signing a striker this month is his side’s next priority, though he reiterated the need to sign a player who wanted to be at the club, in what felt like a pointed message to the Boro man.

He added: “I would say this would be the next step, next to our strikers that we have here, when we would bring a little bit [of] a different face. Maybe a bit of a different quality, that bring us in the end more unpredictable moments.

“In this way, we are searching and want to find someone who helps tactical and technical-wise the team. But also – and especially, you could see today the character and the mentality from this group.

“So we need someone in who is also a really good character, someone who is with a good energy on the way, someone who is hungry and loves to play for Bristol City. I think this is something that we have to check.”
