The Duchess of Sussex is planning to return to Britain for the first time in four years for an Invictus Games event this summer, reports suggest.

Meghan is expected to join her husband, the Duke of Sussex, at the event in Birmingham if the couple’s right to armed police protection in the UK is reinstated, according to The Sun on Sunday. It is not known whether their children would also attend.

Prince Harry lost his automatic right to armed guards when he quit as a working royal in 2020 and moved to California. In May he lost a legal battle with the government to have it reinstated.

However, his request to the home secretary for a full risk assessment to be carried out was granted last month and people close to him are hopeful that the royal and VIP executive committee (Ravec), which makes the final decision on the level of police protection, will agree to the reinstatement.

The Invictus Games Foundation is holding promotional events in Birmingham for the one-year countdown to the 2027 Games, and invitations have been issued to representatives of nations set to take part.

Meghan, 44, has previously attended events for the Invictus Games, which were set up by Harry for wounded soldiers. She joined the duke in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada, in 2024 to promote the following year’s games. She also joined the ceremony for the one-year countdown to the games in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 2022.

The duchess has not visited the UK since September 2022, when she was here for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, have not been in the UK since June of that year, when the family visited for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

A source previously dismissed any suggestions that Meghan would never return to the UK. They told The Sunday Times: “I think she would come back with him [and the children]. They love to do stuff as a family whenever they can, and when they do things as a couple philanthropically, they often do take the kids along privately. I can’t see a reason why he’d come over with the kids without her.”

Harry will be in the UK this month for the latest stage in his long-running legal battle against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of The Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday, over allegations of phone-hacking and unlawful activities, which the publisher strenuously denies.

He is not expected to meet the King, who will still be on his winter break in Scotland. The duke will then return to the UK in the summer for the Invictus Games ceremony as well as the WellChild Awards in September.
