This seminar will look critically at the concept of ’shortage’ as the primary cause of the housing crisis. In a context in which England has a record-breaking number of homes-per-capita, the ‘build, baby, build’ approach adopted by government and developers is coming under increasing scrutiny. The policy measures affecting the profitability of land, rather than the sheer number of homes, is crucial for understanding the current crises of homelessness and housing affordability in London.

Nick Bano is a London barrister specialising in housing rights. His practice involves representing homeless people and residential occupiers in social and private rentals, and bringing challenges against public authorities’ housing policies. His 2023 book Against Landlords: How to solve the housing crisis sought to encourage a change in the discourse around housing, arguing that ever-increasing yields from rented homes is the main driver behind the housing crisis.
