Jonas Vingegaard’s rumored plan to race the Giro d’Italia is a rumor no more. Visma-Lease a Bike laid out the programs of the team’s big stars on Tuesday, confirming that Vingegaard will make his Giro debut before heading back to the Tour de France this season.
“Over the past five years, my build-up to the Tour has been largely the same. This time we have chosen something new,” Vingegaard said in a team announcement, which noted the route laid out by Giro promoter RCS helped his decision. “The organization has designed a great course for the Giro. Perhaps not as demanding as in recent years, which makes combining the Giro and the Tour a favorable option for us.”
The Giro-Tour double has proved an elusive ambition for Grand Tour specialists over the years, especially in the last several decades. After Marco Pantani achieved the feat in 1998, it took more than 25 years for the next successful attempt, when Vingegaard’s main rival in the Grand Tours, Tadej Pogačar, pulled it off in 2024.
