The London Division of Police said there is no further concern about an imminent threat to the safety of the school, students or staff.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday after reportedly making threats to shoot at London Middle School in Madison County, police said.
According to a release from London Division of Police, the 16-year-old told multiple juvenile witnesses on various occasions that he would carry out a shooting at the school. He was not a London City Schools student, police said.
The witnesses reportedly claimed to have observed the teenager with a handgun in the past weeks.
Police said officers obtained and executed a search warrant at the teen’s home just outside of London. They seized a modified airsoft toy gun that resembled a gun, according to the release.
The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office will seek criminal charges against the teen, police said.
Police added there is no further concern about an imminent threat to the safety of the school, students or staff.
“London Police and London Schools continue to work quickly and thoroughly in response to any threats and have procedures in place to complete assessments and investigations of these types of incidents,” the release says.
According to a Facebook post from London City Schools, Superintendent Dr. Lou Kramer said he appreciated the efforts of police and the students who reported the teen.
“While the situation did not ultimately result in any danger to our schools, I appreciate the efforts of our Police Department whose officers responded quickly today,” he wrote. “It is important to understand that our students who made the initial report did the right thing.”
“It is also helpful to keep in mind the individual involved was not a student in the district and most importantly, that the individual had no means to carry out any of the alleged threats,” Kramer added.
10TV has reached out to London City Schools about whether classes will be canceled Friday.
No additional details about the incident were immediately available.
The investigation remains ongoing.
