MINERS GAMBLE has shaped better than the bare result on his last two starts, going with plenty of enthusiasm with the visor refitted over this trip at Chelmsford last week, but not getting the smoothest passage in the straight. He remains one to be interested in from the same mark, despite this being a tougher race, though double Time and Mercurius Power are a couple of potential threats.
17:30 Beckon
BECKON has improved with each start on the all-weather in recent months, opening her account in good style over this trip at Newcastle just before Christmas. She didn’t need to be fully extended to do so, either – she always travelled well, and just pushed out after going a couple of lengths clear in the final furlong.
An opening mark of 68 looks quite lenient now entering handicap, and with even more improvement to come, she makes plenty of appeal. Maskatto is also open to progress on handicap debut, while Five Cay completes the shortlist.
18:00 Pink Socks
Though she hasn’t been with Ian Williams long, PINK SOCKS is thriving all of a sudden, winning on her last two starts in similar events with plenty in hand. She wasn’t deterred by the drop to seven furlongs for her latest success at this course on Tuesday, but she is sure to be suited by a return to a mile, and she can once again concede weight all round.
Taskheer arrives in form and is the obvious danger.
18:30 Secret Road
Yet another horse to be rejuvenated by James Owen recently, SECRET ROAD has won on two of his last four starts for the yard, while filling the runner-up spot in the other two. He couldn’t quite complete a hat-trick at Chelmsford last time, but that was just 24 hours after his Lingfield success, and he ran just as well in defeat under a double penalty, pulling clear of the remainder with the back-to-form winner.
Secret Road is back in classified company now, and he stands out at the weights, so this looks a good opportunity for him. Meanwhile, Relevant Range has posted two solid runner-up efforts in similar races this month and is second choice ahead of Spirit of Bowland.
19:00 Venetian Prince
VENETIAN PRINCE has set a good standard under a penalty, following his stylish win at Newbury when last seen in August. That race has produced subsequent winners, including a couple of useful types, and with further progress on the cards, he is fancied to follow up back from a break.
Debutants You Got To My Soul and Knowledge both appeal on pedigree, though, and should ensure Andrew Balding’s promising colt doesn’t have things all his own way, especially if the market speaks in their favour.
19:30 Ay Gee Ell
A trappy sprint in which marginal preference is for AY GEE ELL, who should prove suited by this return to five furlongs, given that he showed plenty of speed over six at this course last time, headed in the final furlong. He’s therefore taken to bag a second course and distance success at the chief expense of the handily-weighted Northern Spirit.
The remainder are all course and distance winners, too, with Master of My Fate and Star Chorus both respected now.
20:00 Mr Nugget
MR NUGGET didn’t enjoy the rub of the green when a recent fourth over this trip at Lingfield, as he held up out wide with no cover, having to go round the houses on the home turn and then short of room in the straight. He is fancied to build on that promise and quickly resume winning ways to again thwart fellow course scorer Spec of Light.
Elsewhere, Hackney Diamonds is another with winning form round here and also enters calculations along with Skycutter and Rosco Rogers.
20:30 Al Najashi
A few with chances, but Ollie Sangster’s AL NAJASHI appeals as a likely improver now stepping into handicaps for the first time, and edges the vote from Mademoiselle Belle, who is weighted to go well on the back of a resurgent second over this course and distance.
Container Express should prove suited by this return to six furlongs and can also have a say, while Mythical Night and Woody Y Fernandez complete the shortlist.
