Edinburgh and the Lothians could be set for more snow showers as forecasters predict a ‘winter freeze’. Residents across the capital will face flurries from Tuesday, January 27, and freezing conditions are set to continue throughout the week.
Forecasters at the BBC have predicted light snow showers and light winds can be expected. Temperatures are set to reach as low as -1C and will peak at 4C.
Edinburgh, along with cities including Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow are set to be in the crosshairs with several centimetres per hour predicted to fall across Britain.
The Met Office’s extended forecast for Wednesday January 21 to Friday January 30 has highlighted heightened prospects for snowfall across various parts of Britain.
“Throughout this period, the UK will see a battle between Atlantic weather systems attempting to arrive from the west while high pressure and colder conditions attempt to exert some influence from the east,” the forecast said.
“Atlantic air is expected to dominate. This should maintain often cloudy, changeable conditions with showers or longer spells of rain for most. The wettest weather in western parts of the country, drier in the east. Temperatures overall likely to be around average with some night frosts in clearer areas.
“Later in the period, there is an increased chance that conditions will turn colder. This aspect of the forecast is still somewhat uncertain but the potential transition to colder weather also increases the chance of snow across parts of the country.”
Ahead of then, the Met Office forecast for Monday reads: “A largely dry day with bright or sunny spells and light winds. Cloudier near eastern coasts with the best of any sunny spells in the west. Maximum temperature 7 °C.”
It continues for the remainder of the week: “Bands of rain and showers will push northeast through this period. These bands will be interspersed with occasional spells of drier and brighter conditions. Winds strengthening through Wednesday.”
