Brooklyn Beckham claims his parents David and Victoria Beckham rejected all of his offers to spend “quality time” together during a trip to London last year.

On Monday, Jan. 19, the eldest son of the retired soccer star and the fashion designer posted a scathing account on his Instagram Stories of the events that led to his estrangement from his parents, and revealed that his father “rejected” his attempts at spending time together.

In his post on Instagram, Brooklyn, 26, said his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, “has been consistently disrespected by my family, no matter how hard we’ve tried to come together as one,” adding that his mother “has repeatedly invited women from my past into our lives in ways that were clearly intended to make us both uncomfortable.”

“Despite this, we still traveled to London for my dad’s birthday and were rejected for a week as we waited in our hotel room trying to plan quality time with him,” Brooklyn wrote. “He refused all of our attempts, unless it was at his big birthday party with a hundred guests and cameras at every corner.”

David’s 50th birthday party included a star-studded guest list of celebs like Tom CruiseEva Longoria and Gordon Ramsay. The group celebrated at Core, a fine dining restaurant in Notting Hill.

Brooklyn said his father “finally agreed to see” him, but only “under the condition that Nicola wasn’t invited,” calling his dad’s exclusion of his wife a “slap in the face.”

“Later, when my family travelled to LA, they refused to see me at all,” Brooklyn added.

Brooklyn also claimed in his shocking post on Monday that he’s “been silent for years” about the rift with his family, “and have made every attempt to keep these matters private.”

“Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed,” Brooklyn continued. “I do not want to reconcile with my family. I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”

Brooklyn also slammed “the narrative that my wife controls me” and said that idea is “completely backwards.”

“My wife and I do not want a life shaped by image, press, or manipulation,” he wrote. “All we want [is] peace, privacy and happiness for us and our future family.”

A rep for David and Victoria did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Last May, a source reiterated to PEOPLE that David and Victoria were unhappy with the rift with their son.

“The relationship is definitely not beyond repair,” an insider told PEOPLE in early May. “They love and are always there for [Brooklyn]. They’re just hurt and disappointed that he’s now playing no part in family life.”
