Neighbours woke up to a major police operation on their doorsteps

A young man has been arrested at a property in Bristol on suspicion of attempting to join a terrorist group.
A major police presence was seen in Francombe Grove in Horfield as part of a “pre-planned operation” by police and counter-terrorism officers this morning (Tuesday, January 20).
A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to join a proscribed organization, namely Daesh, contrary to Section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
A witness told BristolLive there was a large police presence on the street during the early hours, including police dogs, and remained on scene throughout the morning.
The neighbour added: “We have concerned neighbours who would like to know what has happened on such a quiet street.”
Police have reassured the community that there is not believed to be a wider risk, but anyone with concerns is urged to speak to Avon and Somerset Police officers.
There may be an increased police presence in the area as police and counter-terrorism crews continue to search the property.
At the time of reporting, the man remains in police custody.
A spokesperson for Counter Terrorism Policing South East and Regional Organised Crime Unit has said: “Officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) have arrested a man in Bristol today (January 20) in connection with a terrorism offence.
“A 21-year-old man from Bristol was arrested on suspicion of attempting to join a proscribed organization (Daesh), contrary to section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
“The arrest, led by CTPSE, was supported by officers from Avon and Somerset Police and Counter Terrorism Policing South West.
“People in the Horfield area of the city may notice an increased police presence while search activity takes place.”
Chief Inspector Keith Smith, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: “We appreciate arrests of this nature can cause concern in the local community, but we’d like to reassure everybody this was part of a pre-planned operation by our colleagues at Counter Terrorism Policing South East.
“There is not believed to be any risk posed to the general public living in, working or visiting the area, but if anyone has any concerns or information you think may be relevant, please speak don’t hesitate to speak to us.”
