Three men have been charged with theft after £50,000 worth of underground cables were stolen in Birmingham city centre, police say.

Firearm officers were called to reports of a group allegedly stealing cables below Great Charles Queensway at around 7.30pm on Tuesday, January 20.

Police said the communication cables were worth around £50,000.

Marian Agarlita, 37, Sorin Condrache, 45, and Aldafin Peunaru, 48, have since been charged with theft.

All three accused were due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today, January 22.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We’ve charged three men with a £50,000 metal theft after members of the public alerted us to a gang of suspected thieves stealing cables under the street in Birmingham city centre.

“Marian Agarlita, 37, Sorin Condrache, 45, and Aldafin Peunaru, 48, are all accused of stealing communication cables with a value of around £50,000.

“They were due to appear before city magistrates today after being charged and remanded in custody overnight.

“Firearms officers ,who were patrolling nearby, were flagged down by members of the public as a group of men were trying to steal cables on Great Charles Queensway at around 7.30pm on Tuesday.

“A van carrying cables was also recovered.”
