Sam Bell’s first goal of the season helped Bristol City to 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

After dominating possession for almost the entire game.Scott Twine opened the scoring with a rare headed goal, getting on the end of Ross McCrorie’s cross after his return from suspension.

Bell pounced on a rebound to to complete the win, scoring his first goal since returning from a loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers.

City’s first league win in four moves them up to seventh in the Sky Bet Championship, just a single point outside of the play-off positions.

Gerhard Struber made four changes from the midweek defeat against Ipswich Town with captain Jason Knight starting, while Cam Pring, Ross McCrorie and George Earthy also coming into the side with the latter making his first start since returning on loan.

City started on the front foot, forcing an early set piece. The corner was eventually picked up by Pring whose shot was straight at the goalkeeper, who initially dropped the effort, only to finally claim the ball.

On 14 minutes, Pring had another chance to open the scoring when Adam Randell picked him out perfectly. His control was good, but Murphy Cooper in goal did just enough to keep him out.

Just past the half hour mark and Cooper was again called into action as Twine’s effort from close range was parried away as he latched on to a ball from Emil Riis.

It remained all square at the break and Gerhard Struber made a change at half-time as Sinclair Armstrong replaced George Earthy and his introduction nearly forced the opener as Armstrong burst ahead of his defenders before seeing his deflected effort excellent turned over by Cooper.

The deadlock was finally broken just after the hour mark when McCrorie’s brilliant cross was headed home by Twine for his eighth goal of the campaign.

Struber then immediately looked to his bench as Riis was replaced by Bell whomade a superb impact early on keeping the ball in play on the right hand side, before releasing to Twine whose effort was well saved.

On 72 minutes, Bell almost scored himself, after Atkinson’s cross found him in the area, but Cooper saved again.

Bell did get on the scoresheet on 78 minutes as Armstrong was released in behind before seeing his one-on-one saved, but Bell was there to pounce for his first goal of the season.

City continued to dominate and chances came and went late on but City couldn’t add to the tally.
