When you think of the Vikings, your mind may conjure up flashes of weather-beaten longships, carving a treacherous path through stormy seas, or blood-soaked battlegrounds still echoing with the brutal clash of swords, but there’s much more to the story. Opening at Dock X in Canada Water this March, Vikings: The Immersive Experience will shine a light on the extraordinary tale of Queen Kráka and King Ragnar Lodbrok, while delving into daily life, rituals and Norse mythology. The exhibition uses a combination of immersive storytelling, digital artistry and storied artefacts to transport you into the pages of history.

What is Vikings: The Immersive Experience about?

The legend of Queen Kráka is one that often sits in the shadows of her husband, King Ragnar Lodbrok, but now the spotlight is on her pivotal role as prophet, warrior and mother. As well as exploring the fierce family dynasty and the lands they conquered, this immersive experience looks at the important part Norse mythology played in the lives of Vikings.

What can you expect at the experience?

Equal parts historic exhibition and multi-sensory journey, Vikings: The Immersive Experience plunges you into a time of conquest, legacy and death. In one room, you’ll wander through moss-cloaked forests, where runestones are etched with learnings about Norse life, and discover the mythical Yggdrasil tree, which connects the nine realms, including the underworld, earth and the heavens.

Another room uses virtual reality to tell the saga of Aslaug (Queen Kráka), letting you witness everything from her hidden beginnings and mystical powers to her first meeting with her future husband, Ragnar Lodbrok. There’s even a special ‘junior VR’ version for curious kids who want to learn the story without any frightening content.

As you venture through the experience, you’ll soon reach the ‘Mists of Time’, a fog-laced space where you can clamber on board a majestic longship while 360-degree video mapping and atmospheric soundscapes take you on an epic voyage through the lives of Kráka and Ragnar. There’s even a chance to stand shoulder to shoulder with their sons as they continue the legacy of their fallen father.

All ages will enjoy this enlightening experience as it fuses authentic facts with magical visuals and interactive elements to give you a gripping new perspective on this compelling piece of history.
