Delivering a different meaning to dry January, One Sun Only, a short story collection from French author Camille Bordas, is an eclectic and witty exploration of the human condition. Featuring a mix of life-affirming themes, there’s depth and a direct style of writing to be found in each story. A professor reminisces about a past student in Colorin Colorado, a teenager obsesses over obituaries – with good reason – in Offside Constantly, and anticipation builds to discover the winning lottery ticket holder in my personal favourite, The Lottery In Almeria.

Despite the relatively short length of each story, it was difficult not to become enthralled with the characters and want each story to continue to discover more about their lives. I’m hopeful there will be another collection in the future with further tales of these unique characters and their experiences.

The distinctive writing style may not be for everyone but – for me – offers the ideal formula, providing hidden symbolism and small nuances that make the stories both impactful and relatable. Delivered with wry humour and taut prose, One Sun Only is an unassuming and powerful collection that will leave you both captivated and entertained in equal measure.
