Historic Hall Transformed into a Stunning Floral Tribute Supporting Local Hospice Care

This spring, Oakwell Hall in Birstall will be transformed into a breathtaking sea of 1,000 handcrafted peonies, as The Kirkwood unveils its brand-new event, Mother’s Day in Bloom.

The installation celebrates whoever “Mum” is to you, offering visitors a peaceful space for reflection and remembrance while supporting vital hospice services across Kirklees.

A Unique Tribute for Every Mum

Running from 8th March to 12th April 2026, Mother’s Day in Bloom is designed to honour all forms of motherhood – whether that is a parent, grandparent, guardian, or cherished memory.

Each handcrafted metal peony can be dedicated to a loved one, with every contribution helping to fund specialist care and support for families affected by life-limiting illnesses.

Rachael Savage, Events Manager for The Kirkwood, said: “We are incredibly excited to launch ‘Mother’s Day in Bloom’ at the prestigious Oakwell Hall and will be a privilege to see our vision come to life in the walled garden, providing a stunning, peaceful sanctuary for an installation of this scale.

“Each of the 1,000 pink peonies represents a personal story of love. Whether you are visiting to celebrate a parent, a guardian, or a cherished memory, we want this to be a welcoming space for the whole community to come together and reflect.

“By dedicating a flower, our supporters are creating a lasting keepsake they can eventually take home and treasure, while ensuring The Kirkwood can continue providing vital, specialist care for families across Kirklees.”

Collaboration with Award-Winning Designer

The event has been brought to life in partnership with Kirklees Museums and award-winning floral designer Nicola Robson, owner of Dittany Entwined, who curated the installation.

Speaking about the project, Nicola explained: “I am a professional floral designer and artist, creating work that is deeply rooted in sentiment, memory, and human connection. Flowers have always felt like a powerful language to me – a way of expressing love, remembrance, and emotion when words are not enough.

“Alongside my creative work, I have spent the past 15 years working in the NHS as a physiotherapist, with around half of my career supporting people living with life-limiting conditions. Through this work, I have seen first-hand the extraordinary compassion, care, and dignity that palliative and hospice services offer, not only to patients but to the families who love them.

“Being part of this Mother’s Day installation feels incredibly meaningful. It brings together all my professional experiences and my creative passions in a way that feels like a true tribute – to mothers, to memory, and to the quiet strength and love that surrounds end-of-life care. Each metal peony represents a story, a relationship, and a moment of love, coming together to form something lasting and beautiful.

“I am deeply honoured and excited to contribute to a project that allows people to remember, celebrate, and give back in such a tender and thoughtful way.”

A Historic Venue for a Heartfelt Celebration

A representative from Oakwell Hall said: “We are thrilled to be the official partner for The Kirkwood’s Mother’s Day in Bloom event. Oakwell Hall is a place of history and community, and we cannot think of a better setting for such a heartfelt and visual tribute.

“Our team is proud to support the crucial work of The Kirkwood, and we look forward to seeing Oakwell Hall’s grounds transformed by this sea of peonies, which will undoubtedly bring joy to our visitors this spring.”

Dedicate Your Peony

Supporters can dedicate a peony online to celebrate or remember a special person.

Each flower, standing 50cm tall, will be installed in the walled garden as part of the five-week display and is designed to be a resilient, lasting keepsake.

After the installation concludes, dedications can be collected from The Kirkwood in Dalton between 20th and 25th April 2026.
