Disney+ has just dropped a fan-favourite into its treasure trove of titles, swiftly climbing the ranks to become one of its top 10 most-watched movies.
Mean Girls, the quintessential noughties teen flick, is now available for streaming on Disney+, allowing millennials to watch it time and again as the Lindsay Lohan film was dropped onto the platform this week.
Penned by comedy titan Tina Fey of 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live fame, Mean Girls burst onto cinema screens in 2004, featuring former The Parent Trap star Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron.
Cady’s life takes a turn when she swaps her childhood in Africa for an Illinois high school, guided through the the school’s heirarchy by her new friends.
She soon encounters the notorious Plastics: “Fetch” creator Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), wannabe “weather girl” Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), and their queen bee, the formidable Regina George (Rachel McAdams).
Cady’s admiration for the Plastics shifts when she has a crush on for Regina’s ex-boyfriend, Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), setting off a dramatic chain of events.
With a glittering ensemble including Tina Fey as Ms Norbury, Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler, and Scrubs actor Neil Flynn, Mean Girls has etched itself into pop culture with its arsenal of unforgettable quips.
Iconic lines that still echo across social media include “On Wednesdays we wear pink”, “That is so fetch”, “Is Butter a carb?” and the unforgettable exchange: “I’m sick”, followed by Karen’s feeble cough and Regina’s biting retort: “Boo you w***e”.
Mean Girls may boast an 84% Rotten Tomatoes rating, but its popularity extends far beyond just a figure, with fans clamouring to express their affections for the “wickedly funny” film.
One observer noted: “Undoubtedly the best teen comedy ever adapted from a sociological study..”
Another fan concurred: “Mean Girls is a hysterical comedy about high school cliques, and may be the best teen satire since Heathers”, while someone described it as “comic gold”.
More than 20 years have passed since Mean Girls initially hit cinemas, yet it has been revitalised with the 2024 remake, featuring Angourie Rice and Renee Rapp as Cady and Regina respectively.
This iteration diverges from the original, taking the form of a musical, which has also inspired successful stage productions in the West End and on Broadway.
