An apartment block was evacuated as fire crews were seen scaling balconies in Trafford on Sunday (May 4). The blaze, which broke out on a balcony at the apartment block on Chorlton Street in Old Trafford, then spread to the building’s cladding.

Fire engines could be seen in attendance shortly after 3pm, with crowds of evacuated residents on the street outside. Fire crews were focusing their efforts around a third-floor balcony.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said the fire, which had broken out on a balcony, then spread to the cladding on Sunday afternoon.

Affected cladding was removed from the building as the flames were dampened. Crews remained in attendance for a number of hours. No further details have been confirmed.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just before 3.10pm on Sunday (May 4) five fire engines from Stretford, Moss Side, Manchester Central and Salford fire stations plus the turntable ladder and drone were called to a fire involving a balcony on the third floor of an apartment block on Chorlton Street, Old Trafford, which has spread to the building’s cladding.

“Firefighters are using the turntable ladder to remove the cladding while using a jet, hosereels and the drone to extinguish the fire. Residents have been evacuated and crews remain in attendance to extinguish the fire.”
