The Met Office has revealed the exact time thunderstorms are set to hit the UK this week. The weather body has issued a yellow warning for the storms across much of the country.

Forecasters say that large parts of the country will be affected when the storms hit on Monday, May 12.

Greater Manchester looks set to avoid the worst of the weather, with the region unaffected by the warning. But the warning covers parts of Cheshire, the Midlands and Southern England, plus large parts of Wales.

It comes after glorious sunshine has basked over the country this weekend, with temperatures in the mid-20s across many areas.

But the dry conditions are expected to come to a halt tomorrow, with heavy showers and thunder forecast in some areas.

The warning comes into effect at midday on Monday, May 12 and lasts until 10pm on Monday night.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Monday afternoon.

“Whilst these will be fairly fast-moving, rain may be intense for short periods of time and produce 20-30 mm in less than an hour, with 40-50mm within 1-2 hours in one or two places where thunderstorms grow larger.

“Lightning, hail and gusty winds will be additional hazards. Showers and thunderstorms will ease through the evening.”

The Met Office says people in the affected areas should check if their homes are at risk of flash flooding and prepare for the possibility.

Later today, weather will turn mild overnight with thundery showers continuing to spread across southern Britain. The temperature will be chilly but more settled towards the northeast.

On Monday, May 12, the weather will become more fine and settled in the northeast, with showery weather in the rest of the country.

Further thunderstorms will continue in the south and west at the start of the week. Weather will be very warm for all, with showers easing into the evening.
