If it’s May in the Canadian province of Alberta, wild horses are on high alert for predatory grizzly bears.

On Sunday, the Help Alberta Wildies Society shared footage showing a band of horses running for their lives across a forest clearing.

HAWS stated: “I’ve known these horses long enough to know when they are being pursued by an unwelcome visitor. In this case, the baby is up front and will live to see another day. We did not see what was coming up behind them.” (Click here to view the footage.)

The trail-cam footage is reminiscent of past video clips featured by HAWS, which have shown grizzly bears in hot pursuit.

Perhaps most illustrative of the danger wild horses face when hungry grizzly bears emerge from hibernation was a chase captured in May 2022. That HAWS clip, picked up by Viral Hog, is posted below. It shows horses charging past one camera with a grizzly bear following at a sprint, perhaps 40 yards behind.

A second view picks up the chase, with the bear trying to close ground. A foal, perhaps the target, is shown in the mix. All of the horses look tired but the outcome of this chase was not clear.

The Help Alberta Wildies Society (HAWS) shared the same footage via Facebook. The description, in part:

“The next time someone tells you that the Wild Horses have no natural predators, send them to me. We are losing a lot of horses this year, sooner and quicker than in past years. Not just the foals. Adults also.”
