Plans to transform a former community building in Paisley into a café and takeaway have been submitted to Renfrewshire Council for consideration.

MJK Architectural Studios has lodged a request for planning permission, on behalf of the owner, to convert the disused facility in Foxbar’s Lyon Road.

If given the go ahead by the local authority, the business intends to operate from 11am until 10pm, Monday to Sunday, and offer a range of items from filled rolls and paninis to kebabs and pizzas.

Tea, coffee and soft drinks would also be on the menu as well as cakes and pastries.

That’s according to a planning statement which has been submitted with the application and sheds light on the background to the proposed project.

It said: “[The applicant] has recently sold his convenience store in the immediate area and as owner of the community building wishes to provide a café/small restaurant/hot food outlet in the area that he has had a business in for more than a decade.

“The premises were originally a community building until sold by the council to [the applicant] several years ago.

“The premises are located in Lyon Road and are surrounded by a steel open bar fence with a gate. It sits in a largely open grassed area and is visible from the main artery road.

“The area is the Foxbar housing estate which has few facilities such as shops and premises for eating or food takeaways serving the local population.

“The proposal is to operate as a café with hot food carry-out.”

If approved, the facility’s kitchen will have a range of equipment, such as a cooker, soup kettle, panini press, shawarma grill, electric pizza oven, fridge and freezer, sinks, wash hand basins and ventilation.

Last week, Renfrewshire Council notified neighbours of the site about the plans via letter and invited them to comment if they wished to do so.

A decision on the application, which is expected to be made by planning officers, will be confirmed at a later date.
