Ruben Amorim has suggested implementing the right mentality at Manchester United will be more important than signing players this summer.

United have endured their worst season in Premier League history and Amorim is hoping to win the Europa League, which would grant entry into the Champions League next season.

Playing in the Champions League would be a huge boost for the club’s broadcast revenue and make it easier to attract players this summer. Amorim wasn’t supported in the January transfer window and he will need heavy backing in the summer window to get United heading in the right direction again.

United need a new striker, a right wing-back and a new midfielder, while other positions need to be strengthened, but Amorim has argued instilling the right mentality is just as important.

Amorim discussed the club’s culture in his post-West Ham press conference and he touched on the need to implement an elite mentality again when he spoke to Sky Sports this week.

“There are some things that we can’t change in the summer with transfers,” said Amorim. “It’s the feeling in this club, the way we see this club, it’s that real feeling that we cannot lose a match.

“It’s impossible for us to play at home and lose, this kind of feeling, we have to change that and not thinking about transfers. That is something more profound than just changing people.

“We need to address this and we are doing that also. People cannot see that, but we are changing a lot of things in Carrington, the way we work here and the behaviour you must have in this club… The way we connect the academy with our team.

“All these things that you cannot see, we are working on that. So we need to forget about the final and try be better in the game against Chelsea because we have a lot to improve.”

Amorim was asked when he realised ‘things’ weren’t right at United and said: “I cannot tell the moment, but you have that feeling when you see things and see the way we play.

“But again, it seems like I’m pushing toward the players, and I’m responsible. It’s hard to find another word, I’m really embarrassed. Something is wrong with the way we are playing football.”

He continued: “The last game [West Ham] is something we felt a lot, especially because we won against Athletic Bilbao and we had an opportunity to maintain the momentum.

“We had several moments like this in the season and we dropped. But we are addressing that since day one, so Chelsea is another opportunity to play the game, perform well and show character.”
