Alaknanda is located near the right centre of the image (see zoomed image in inset). The central portion of the image is dominated by bright galaxies of the Abell 2744 cluster. The cluster acts as a gravitational lens and magnifies (and in some cases, distorts) galaxies lying in the background. Alaknanda is magnified by a factor approximately two, making this faint galaxy easier to detect.
