{"id":1000000,"date":"2026-06-02T07:41:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T07:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1000000\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T07:41:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T07:41:16","slug":"birmingham-nhs-trust-to-digitise-more-than-235m-patient-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1000000\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham NHS trust to digitise more than 235m patient records"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Foster, chief clinical information officer at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) (Credit: UHB)<\/p>\n<p><strong>University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) has partnered with healthtech firm Mizaic on a digital transformation programme that will see more than 235 million patient record images migrated to a new cloud-based platform by December 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the multi-year agreement, UHB will deploy MediViewer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mizaic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mizaic<\/a>\u2019s electronic document management system as part of a wider record modernisation strategy focused on improving access to patient information, strengthening interoperability, and reducing the operational burden of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalhealth.net\/2009\/05\/prepare-health-systems-for-ageing-eu-told\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ageing systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Pickering, chief executive officer at Mizaic, said: \u201cUniversity Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is an organisation operating at significant scale and complexity, so we are proud to be supporting a programme of this importance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs NHS organisations continue modernising their digital estates, there is growing demand for platforms capable of managing and connecting vast volumes of patient information without disrupting clinical workflows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project demonstrates how large-scale migrations can be delivered at pace while creating stronger digital foundations for future interoperability, efficiency, and more informed care delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trust will use MediViewer to migrate clinical data from an existing enterprise content management system into a more scalable cloud-based environment.<\/p>\n<p>The platform will integrate with more than 40 clinical systems, alongside the trust\u2019s in-house clinical portal and electronic patient record, enabling clinicians to access information more efficiently within existing workflows.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Foster, chief clinical information officer at UHB, said: \u201cThis is a complex environment, with a significant volume of data and a large number of upstream systems, so confidence in the migration approach and ingestion performance was critical from the outset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMizaic\u2019s experience in delivering comparable, high-volume programmes assured us the transition could be achieved at pace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The programme has been designed to advance UHB\u2019s long-term <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalhealth.net\/2025\/04\/navigating-the-epr-landscape-exploring-alternative-paths-to-digital-maturity-and-success-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">digital maturity<\/a> goals. It will create an infrastructure capable of managing large volumes of unstructured clinical data while improving data sharing and interoperability across systems and services<\/p>\n<p>Data security and information governance are key to the programme\u2019s design and delivery.
