(ABC News: Jake Grant)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For Ms Holton, going to a free workout group in her local community was a game-changer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Came down and absolutely loved it. It&#8217;s really nice to have a group and it just keeps growing,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Finding a free exercise group has drastically improved her health, as noted by her GP, and she is part of a growing trend.<\/p>\n<p>Free exercise classes become a lifeline<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At a community exercise class in South Arm, south-east of Hobart, the mood is upbeat, with laughter, movement, and a sense of relief.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Participation has more than doubled in the past year, with more than 100 Tasmanians now involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Trainer Ollie Mathewson said the surge was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s free of charge for everybody \u2026 and over the last 12 months I&#8217;ve noticed a lot more people starting to come along,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man standing in front of a playground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0b777e29c0f3c2f8aae66353e10f72a2.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ollie Mathewson says attendance at his classes has almost doubled over the past year. (ABC News: Jake Grant)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With the median individual spend on fitness in Tasmania sitting at almost $600 last year, Ms Orr said the warning signs were already visible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re going to see more results of long-term neglect; higher injuries, more need for mental health assistance. It&#8217;s going to snowball.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her concerns echo Professor Norris&#8217;s academic findings that once healthy routines break down, the consequences ripple for years.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The changes are very small \u2026 while they add up over time, there is no immediate impact,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Ms Orr said.Calls for more free and low-cost options<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Mathewson hopes the success of free community classes will inspire governments and private operators to expand accessible fitness programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;More free options would be a great thing.
