{"id":1001606,"date":"2026-06-03T01:06:21","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T01:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1001606\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T01:06:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T01:06:21","slug":"uk-house-of-lords-committee-calls-on-bank-of-england-to-reconsider-proposed-stablecoin-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1001606\/","title":{"rendered":"UK House of Lords committee calls on Bank of England to reconsider proposed stablecoin restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A U.K. House of Lords committee said the Bank of England (BOE) should reconsider its proposed limits on consumer stablecoin holdings in a new report.<\/p>\n<p>The cross-party Financial Services Regulation Committee of the U.K. Parliament&#8217;s second chamber also advised reconsideration of requirements for stablecoin issuers to hold at least 40% of backing assets in central bank deposits yielding no interest in its &#8220;Stablecoins: waiting for regulation&#8221; report published Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Stablecoins are digital tokens pegged to the value of a traditional financial asset, such as a fiat currency like the U.S. dollar or the pound sterling. <\/p>\n<p>As central banks and lawmakers have constructed regulatory frameworks for the use and issuance of stablecoins in recent years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2026\/02\/25\/the-uk-is-picking-winners-for-its-digital-dollar-future-while-coinbase-ceo-cries-foul\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bank of England has stood out for proposing<\/a> what many industry figures deemed unnecessarily stern restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K.&#8217;s central bank proposed limits of 20,000 pounds ($27,000) per coin for individuals and 10 million pounds ($13.5 million) for businesses, which some observers said risked making the country uncompetitive compared to neighboring markets which would have no such limitations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the early stage of the GBP stablecoin market, rather than pre-emptively impose holding limits, the Bank should consider monitoring the growth of the market and imposing holding limits only if the financial stability risks clearly warrant it,&#8221; the House of Lords committee said.<\/p>\n<p>The report questioned the rules on backing assets, saying they &#8220;could have a significant impact on the business viability of stablecoin issuers in the U.K.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For its part, the BOE is planning to ease the proposed restrictions, with Sarah Breeden, deputy governor for financial stability, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2026\/05\/14\/bank-of-england-ready-to-water-down-overly-conservative-stablecoin-proposals-ft\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">admitting they were &#8220;overly conservative,&#8221;<\/a> last month. <\/p>\n<p>The BOE is &#8220;looking very hard at whether there are different ways we can manage what we think is an important risk as stablecoins come into play,&#8221; Breeden said in an interview with the Financial Times. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A U.K. House of Lords committee said the Bank of England (BOE) should reconsider its proposed limits on&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":1001607,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[5008],"tags":[748,393,4884,34950,16,15],"class_list":["post-1001606","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-england","tag-britain","tag-england","tag-great-britain","tag-stablecoins","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/116683498856268681","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1001606","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1001606"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1001606\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1001607"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1001606"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1001606"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1001606"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
