In Milan, inside D1 Milano\u2019s flagship store, a familiar yellow face appears squeezed against the architecture, bright against the city\u2019s polished retail setting. Stuart Semple<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s HappyWatch arrives through that same visual pressure, turning his squished smiley motif into a limited-edition wearable artwork made with the Milanese watch<\/strong><\/a> brand.<\/p>\n

The collaboration takes one of Semple\u2019s most recognizable symbols and brings it onto the wrist, where time becomes both object and feeling. HappyWatch is available online worldwide and at the D1 Milano flagship, with the artist framing the piece around pressure, optimism, and the small emotional charge of color.<\/p>\n

Stuart Semple\u2019s HappyWatch carries a yellow smiley face across a black case and bright pink silicone strap, with the graphic appearing to spill beyond the dial. That detail became central to the design process. The artist<\/strong><\/a> insisted that the hand-drawn face continue from the engraved watch face onto the strap, which required over a year of development with D1 Milano\u2019s team to align print, engraving, and strap construction.<\/p>\n

Its language moves away from the heavy codes of collector watch culture. The case feels graphic and light, the strap reads almost like a piece of wearable pigment, and the face keeps the slight wobble of a drawing under compression. Semple describes watches today as extensions of personality, since phones already tell us the time. Here, that personality is emotional, bright, and intentionally unguarded.<\/p>\n

Each HappyWatch comes in a special box set with a jar of Stuart Semple\u2019s Pinkest Pink pigment, placing the release closer to an art multiple than a conventional accessory launch. The gesture also ties the watch back to Semple\u2019s wider practice, where color has long carried a public charge, from his Happy Cloud interventions to his well-known CultureHustle materials.<\/p>\n

At the Milan launch, the storefront became part of the work. A giant squashed smiley appeared pressed by the surrounding facade, while a vitrine installation drew from one of Semple\u2019s paintings. Visitors were invited to make small smiley sculptures from Pinkest Pink clay and press them onto the windows, adding their own marks to the building\u2019s glass skin.<\/p>\n
