After a terrible season for Manchester City, you’d expect them to reinforce further and return to contention.

If that happens, it should be more of a fierce battle for the title than this year’s, which petered out as Arsenal relentlessly drew games.

There is also the African Cup of Nations at the start of 2026, which hits Liverpool harder than most due to the mid-season loss of Mo Salah.

rent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, as he leaves for Real Madrid.

While the team won’t be having to endure the revamped Club World Cup that takes place for the first time this summer, unlike Chelsea and Manchester City, there’s a clear need to freshen up the team.

Therefore it’s crucial the transfer strategy is as close to flawless as possible this summer, in order to keep the positive momentum Liverpool have built this season and carry it even further.

Liverpool’s number one transfer priority is a left-back

The Athletic is reporting that Liverpool have a clear priority this summer – and that’s securing a left-back.

While the club is currently in advanced talks with Jeremie Frimpong over a transfer, signing a left-back is considered more important.

Despite Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure for Real Madrid, Liverpool want to increase competition in the opposite full-back position.

Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are the current options that the club are looking to strengthen on, and The Athletic reports Tsimikas is likely to move on if a new left-back is signed.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="1024" height="734" Darlington/Copa/Getty Images

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool and is understood to be a leading contender – however, The Athletic understands he is not the only option.

Although a deal for Frimpong could still definitely happen, the club sees Conor Bradley as being in contention to become a starter next season.

There’s also Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah who can offer cover for Bradley too.

The Athletic also stated Liverpool are considering a move for a centre-back, though a move for Dean Huijsen could be scuppered by Xabi Alonso.

Reasons why Liverpool are keen on Jeremie Frimpong

The Athletic has revealed a few reasons why Liverpool are actively pursuing Jeremie Frimpong.

One of which is his release clause – understood to be between £29-33m. It would represent a similar deal to the one which took Alexis Mac Allister to Anfield.

Another is Frimpong’s personality. The 24-year-old is extremely popular at Leverkusen, which fits a key recruitment goal for Liverpool in signing good players who are also good people.

The Dutchman also has strong relationships with his international teammates who play for the Reds in Ryan Gravenberch, Virgil Van Dijk and Cody Gakpo.

Photo by Joris Verwijst/BSR Agency/Getty Images

Crucially, Frimpong is also a homegrown player after spending more than a decade of his youth career at Manchester City.

This helps to replace the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold as a homegrown player, and means the non-homegrown spots are still free to be used by other potential signings.

Currently, Liverpool have just one non-homegrown spot available, but this could change with departures in the summer.

Luis Diaz is currently in contract talks with the Reds and has confirmed how long he wants to stay for.

The Reds are also keen on Frimpong due to his flexibility in being able to play as a full-back and also a right winger.

This is particularly important as he could provide the ideal cover for Mo Salah when he departs for AFCON in January.

Liverpool have a big summer ahead of them as they look to retain their Premier League title.
