While she and Reeves both said progress was made, thorny issues remain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. tariffs mean that striking a deal \u201chas gone up the scale in terms of political priorities,\u201d Shashi Tharoor, chair of the Indian parliament\u2019s committee on external affairs, told POLITICO. \u201cWe all need buffers against the global trade uncertainties that have suddenly shot up in people&#8217;s consciousness,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Tharoor points to several \u201cstumbling blocks\u201d remaining in the talks, including business mobility visas, the U.K.\u2019s plans to tax Indian steel and other high carbon emissions commodities at the border, and intellectual property.<\/p>\n<p>British officials took an upbeat tone this week, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/apr\/09\/we-are-nearly-there-uk-and-india-agree-90-of-free-trade-agreement?utm_term=67f745c65548d95749e1e7aa16af9cb9&amp;utm_campaign=GuardianTodayUK&amp;utm_source=esp&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;CMP=GTUK_email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian<\/a> that visa mobility issues had largely been resolved. But one person close to negotiations, granted anonymity to speak freely, said that was \u201cnot so accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would simply like larger quotas for professionals, particularly in sectors like IT and healthcare,\u201d Tharoor added. \u201cBut [U.K.] domestic political concerns about foreigners coming into the country would certainly be a stymying factor.
