{"id":100411,"date":"2025-05-14T09:24:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T09:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/100411\/"},"modified":"2025-05-14T09:24:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T09:24:14","slug":"london-flat-europe-market-dips-as-china-hits-out-at-uk-us-trade-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/100411\/","title":{"rendered":"London flat, Europe market dips as China hits out at UK-US trade deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Stocks in Asia were mostly higher overnight but the Nikkei (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5EN225?p=%5EN225\" data-ylk=\"slk:^N225;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">^N225<\/a>) lost 0.1% on the day in Tokyo despite data showing Japan\u2019s PPI inflation coming in at 4.0% in April as expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The Hang Seng (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5EHSI?p=%5EHSI\" data-ylk=\"slk:^HSI;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">^HSI<\/a>) rose 2.2% in Hong Kong and the Shanghai Composite (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/000001.SS?p=000001.SS\" data-ylk=\"slk:000001.SS;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">000001.SS<\/a>) was 0.9% up by the end of the session. The Kospi (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5EKS11\" data-ylk=\"slk:^KS11;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">^KS11<\/a>) also rose 1.2%<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Elsewhere, Australia\u2019s Q1 wage index came in stronger than anticipated, up 0.9% quarter-on-quarter, compared to the 0.8% expected, and yields on 10-year Australian government bonds are up 4.1bps this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Across the pond on Wall Street, the S&amp;P 500 (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5EGSPC\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:^GSPC;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">^GSPC<\/a>) rose 0.7%, which has only just turned positive for 2025 again, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5EIXIC?p=%5EIXIC&amp;.tsrc=fin-srch\" data-ylk=\"slk:^IXIC;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">^IXIC<\/a>) was 1.6% higher. The Dow Jones (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5EDJI?p=%5EDJI&amp;.tsrc=fin-srch\" data-ylk=\"slk:^DJI;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">^DJI<\/a>) slipped 0.6%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">It comes as markets continue to dial back expectations for cuts from the US Federal Reserve this year, driven by the broader risk-on tone and lower recession fears, rather than the soft inflation print.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Futures were only expecting 53bps of cuts by the December meeting, which was -3.2bps lower on the day, and the fewer cuts priced for this year since February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">President Donald Trump continued to call for lower rates, saying in a post that \u201cTHE FED must lower the RATE, like Europe and China have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Economists will be watching tomorrow\u2019s PPI data closely for categories that feed through into core PCE, the Fed\u2019s preferred inflation gauge.
