{"id":1004355,"date":"2026-06-04T07:16:20","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T07:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1004355\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T07:16:20","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T07:16:20","slug":"few-workers-think-pension-auto-enrolment-scheme-will-see-them-through-retirement-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1004355\/","title":{"rendered":"Few workers think pension auto-enrolment scheme will see them through retirement \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fewer than one in five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/work\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/work\/\">workers<\/a> eligible for the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pension\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pension\/\">pension<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/auto-enrolment\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/auto-enrolment\/\">auto-enrolment<\/a> system believe it will deliver a sufficient income in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/retirement\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/retirement\/\">retirement<\/a>, according to a new survey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Almost 770,000 workers were compulsorily signed up to the new auto-enrolment scheme on January 1st. It is designed to ensure all workers have a reasonable income in retirement rather than relying solely on the State pension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The system, called My Future Fund, takes 1.5 per cent of a worker\u2019s gross wage each month. A similar sum comes from the employer, with the State adding \u20ac1 for every \u20ac3 put in by the worker. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Those figures will rise gradually over the coming years so that workers will have 6 per cent of their wages taken from 2035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The deductions are made from the salary of all workers aged between 23 and 60 who earn more than \u20ac20,000 a year and who have no other pension payments deducted from their salary at source outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/prsi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/prsi\/\">PRSI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, from July 1st, a two-month window opens during which workers paying into the scheme can choose to opt out of the arrangement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eight in 10 workers eligible for auto-enrolment don\u2019t think it, alone, will be enough to provide for their retirement, according to a survey from Ask Acorn, a nationwide network of financial intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Of those, one in three believe their auto-enrolment pension alone will be \u201cnowhere near enough\u201d, the survey of 1,000 eligible workers nationwide found. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ask Acorn chief executive Keith Butler said limits on the contributions that can be made into auto-enrolment mean there also limits on the extent to which the system alone can be relied upon to provide a sufficient income in retirement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is borne out by the results of our survey, with the vast majority of those eligible for auto-enrolment feeling that My Future Fund alone would not be enough to provide for their retirement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is encouraging as it shows that most Irish people understand the restrictions of auto-enrolment and are under no illusion about the retirement income that the scheme can deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2026\/06\/01\/workers-signed-up-to-states-auto-enrolment-pension-scheme-can-opt-out-from-next-month\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hundreds of thousands of workers in Ireland can opt out of auto-pension scheme next monthOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said auto-enrolment does not allow flexibility in contribution rates so neither employees nor employers can contribute more or less than these set percentages.
