Josh Klinghoffer has said there\u2019s a \u201ca slight disrespect\u201d to the Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/a> albums made without John Frusciante<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with\u00a0Guitar World<\/a>, the guitarist opened up about the fan reception between the albums he made with the band, in comparison to the response to those featuring Frusicante.<\/p>\n

Frusciante joined the band in 1988 following the death of their founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, and has been on and off with the band ever since. He has performed on some of RHCP\u2019s biggest albums, including \u2018Californication\u2019, \u2018Blood Sugar Sex Magik\u2019 and \u2018By The Way\u2019.<\/p>\n

Klinghoffer filled in for Frusciante in 2011 during an off period, going on to record two studio albums (\u2018I\u2019m with You<\/a>\u2018 and \u2018The Getaway\u2019) with the band until Frusicante rejoined in 2019.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0Guitar World, Klinghoffer was asked whether he was bothered by his records being somewhat overlooked in comparison to Frusciante\u2019s \u2013 despite fans generally believing Klinghoffer\u2019s albums to be of good quality.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot really,\u201d he responded, theorising it was due to \u201cthe way John views the band when he\u2019s not in it, and it makes sense to me. They have enough music that they don\u2019t need to look to some of the other records\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut for anyone who connected with those albums, like \u2018One Hot Minute\u2019, or the two I made with them\u2026 I imagine it\u2019s a little weird for me to be banished from the catalogue and the live performance,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

He called Frusciante a \u201cstrong presence\u201d, continuing: \u201cHe\u2019s kind of the preeminent guitar player, you know? He\u2019s the one who made the work with them where they experienced their global fame\u201d.<\/p>\n

Klinghoffer went on to say that he had listened to RHCP\u2019s newer albums with Frusciante, \u2018Unlimited Love<\/a>\u2018 and \u2018Return of the Dream Canteen<\/a>\u2018, saying: \u201cI listened to their new stuff one time when it first came out.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also addressed comments he made about the band on Brazilian podcast 5 Notas, where he claimed the Chili Peppers were \u201cdoing cooler music\u201d while he was with them<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cI made some comments in South America that people didn\u2019t like \u2013 but I don\u2019t think I said anything shocking,\u201d he said. \u201cI just said that I thought that what I was working on with them was cooler! But I don\u2019t really keep up so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

When\u00a0Guitar World\u00a0added that the band \u201creturn to a specific type of sound\u201d with Frusciante, Klinghoffer concurred: \u201cThey have their thing, their formula. I guess it\u2019s so much more definitive to the main amount of Chili Pepper fans; you know, that\u2019s just what the Chili Peppers are. It\u2019s probably a testament to them that they can step out of that and do a good record with Dave Navarro<\/a>. I like that record too [\u2018One Hot Minute\u2019].\u201d<\/p>\n

Klinghoffer went on to say he noticed \u201ca slight disrespect\u201d to records made without Frusciante, saying: \u201cOnce John\u2019s back in the picture, it\u2019s like the other records don\u2019t exist. That\u2019s the only weird thing to me, because those records were important at the time, you know? They were important enough to go and play them around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

We last spoke to the Chili Peppers in 2022<\/a> for \u2018Unlimited Love\u2019, where they spoke about their reunion with Frusciante. \u201cFlea had put the idea [of rejoining] in my head,\u201d he told us, \u201cand I was sitting there with the guitar thinking that I hadn\u2019t written any rock music in so long. Could I still do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

He added the Chili Peppers felt \u201cfresh, like a new band\u201d, adding there was a less competitive attitude that hekped foster creativity.\u00a0\u201cI put a lot less of my ego [into it] than I had previously and I think that was true with everybody. It wasn\u2019t so much a competition thing as really wanting to give a part of ourselves to one another [and] being excited to listen to what the others were bringing in.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes in the past, like on \u2018By The Way\u2019 for example, or [1989 album] \u2018Mother\u2019s Milk\u2019, one person would feel stifled at the expense of another,\u201d he added. \u201cThis time it felt very much like people who care about each other and are genuinely excited for everybody else to be the best that they can be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since leaving the band, Klinghoffer was charged with vehicular manslaughter. After pleading not guilty<\/a>, he narrowly avoided jail time <\/a>for the crime.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Dave Navarro has reflected on the \u201cbacklash\u201d to replacing Frusciante in RHCP<\/a>, saying: \u201cWhatever magic John brought to the Chili Peppers, I didn\u2019t have that style of magic\u201d.<\/p>\n

Navarro went on to describe himself as a \u201cgoth kid in a funk band\u201d, adding: \u201cIf you had to narrow down what the disconnect was, I\u2019d say that would be it \u2026 It became clear pretty fast that as much as we tried and as much as we wanted it to work, we weren\u2019t coming from the same musical place.\u201d<\/p>\n
