<\/a>Hospital call and assault claims<\/p>\nMehler said his officers were called to Saint Joseph Hospital for reports of an unruly person who had been brought there by ambulance.<\/p>\n
\u201cOfficers learned the individual had previously been assaulted at a sober living treatment facility outside the city limits,\u201d Mehler said.<\/p>\n
The body camera footage shows officers arriving at the hospital and speaking with a staff member.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe settled down for five minutes, and then he almost ran over one of my patients as I was taking her into the room,\u201d the hospital staff member said.<\/p>\n
Officers were then brought to Brooks\u2019 room.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019d you do to your face?\u201d an officer asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe other guy, what did he do to my face when I was chilling with his kids? Ask him, man,\u201d Brooks said.<\/p>\n
In the footage, officers told Brooks that because the sober living facility was outside of city limits, they would not be the ones to handle the alleged assault case. They told Brooks that once he was discharged, he would need to arrange a ride home. Then, officers left.<\/p>\n
Arrest on outstanding warrant<\/p>\n
Some time later, their cameras picked back up in the hospital parking lot, where officers found Brooks with security guards.<\/p>\n
Brooks gave officers his ID.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, I might have to throw one more wrench into things. You\u2019ve got a warrant, so you\u2019re gonna have to go with us anyway,\u201d an officer said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay. That\u2019s fine,\u201d Brooks said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I\u2019m gonna let you smoke a cigarette, sit here for a second,\u201d the officer said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, it\u2019s fine. We can go ahead and go,\u201d Brooks said.<\/p>\n
The officer said the warrant was for shoplifting. Officers handcuffed Brooks and placed him in a cruiser. He did not resist.<\/p>\n
Brooks was then taken to the Laurel County Correctional Center to be booked.<\/p>\n
\u201cAppreciate you, sir. Good luck to you, bub,\u201d an officer said as he left.<\/p>\n
Acting Chief Mehler said the London Police Department is \u201ccommitted to transparency and accountability\u201d in everything they do.<\/p>\n
