Supergirl, the Milly Alcock film from James Gunn and Peter Safran\u2019s DC Universe, is tracking to earn significantly less in its opening weekend than its predecessor Superman did in its opening frame in 2025.<\/p>\n
Superman, of course, introduced Alcock\u2019s Supergirl in a cameo toward the end of the Gunn-directed film as the hard-partying owner of Krypto the Superdog, the four-legged canine companion that accompanied Clark Kent\/Superman (David Corenswet) throughout the film. Corenswet, in turn, will appear in Supergirl.<\/p>\n
FORBES | By Tim Lammers Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film finds Kara Zor-El\/Supergirl on a mission of vengeance. Supergirl also introduces Jason Momoa to the DCU as the badass anti-hero Lobo and also stars Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts and David Krumholtz.<\/p>\n Supergirl opens in theaters on June 26, and according to Deadline<\/a>, the film is tracking to make $55 million domestically in its first weekend frame. By contrast, Superman opened with $125 million in its opening weekend from July 11-13.<\/p>\n Superman went on to earn $354.2 million domestically and $264 million internationally for a worldwide domestic take of $618.7 million before marketing expenses. Forbes Australia<\/a> reported in December that Supergirl had a $200 million budget before marketing, a number that was disputed by Gunn. In a Threads<\/a> post, Gunn said, \u201cNot even a little bit true.\u201d<\/p>\n FORBES | By Tim Lammers Deadline<\/a>, however, reported on Tuesday that the film cost $175 million before marketing (that\u2019s what they \u201chear,\u201d anyway), which is still a hefty number. How much the marketing cost for Supergirl is yet to be revealed, if at all. However, less than a week after Superman opened last year, Variety<\/a> reported that the film had a production budget of $225 million with another $125 million to market it.<\/p>\n Milly Alcock Has Already Been Courting Controversy Before The Release Of ‘Supergirl\u2019<\/p>\n While no one knows for sure why Supergirl is tracking far below Superman\u2019s opening and where it will end up at the box office, one thing that can\u2019t be of help is star Milly Alcock\u2019s controversial comments in the past couple of months.<\/p>\n In a March interview with Vanity Fair<\/a>, Alcock said she was certain to face online backlash for playing Supergirl and likened the experience to something she felt when she starred as the young version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon from 2022 to 2024.<\/p>\n FORBES | By Tim Lammers \u201cIt definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,\u201d Alcock told Vanity Fair. \u201cWe have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women\u2019s bodies. I can\u2019t really stop them. If you\u2019re pissing the right kind of people off, you\u2019re doing OK.\u201d<\/p>\n Alcock\u2019s charged comments in turn caught the attention of such popular comic book, sci-fi and fantasy-focused YouTube creators as Film Threat<\/a>, Nerdrotic<\/a> and Critical Drinker<\/a>, who likened the actress\u2019 comments to Rachel Zegler\u2019s controversial comments<\/a> before the release of the box office flop Snow White in 2025.<\/p>\n Supergirl opens in theaters on June 26.<\/p>\n
