{"id":1006606,"date":"2026-06-05T08:03:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T08:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1006606\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T08:03:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T08:03:16","slug":"snap-acquires-ar-firm-illumix-in-bid-to-boost-ar-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1006606\/","title":{"rendered":"Snap Acquires AR Firm Illumix in Bid to Boost AR Efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/snap\/\" id=\"auto-tag_snap\" data-tag=\"snap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Snap<\/a>, parent of Snapchat, has acquired spatial augmented reality company <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/illumix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_illumix\" data-tag=\"illumix\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Illumix<\/a> in a bid to boost its AR efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe company\u2019s interest was spurred by Illumix\u2019s work in scaling its mapping technology and building it out for real-world experiences. As part of the deal, Snap will adopt Illumix\u2019s technology and platform as it seeks to build out its revamped <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/specs\/\" id=\"auto-tag_specs\" data-tag=\"specs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Specs<\/a> glasses. Snap will also retain most of Illumix\u2019s staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSnap is not disclosing the transaction\u2019s value. The company launched a standalone subsidiary focused on AR glasses, Specs Inc., in January, and it plans to announce more news on the glasses at the Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, California, on June 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIllumix (<a href=\"https:\/\/illumix.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">illumix.com<\/a>), founded in 2017 by CEO Kirin Sinha, focused on building AR products that brought the digital and physical worlds closer. It co-developed an AR version of video game \u201cFive Nights at Freddy\u2019s,\u201d\u00a0which launched in 2019. It has also focused on bringing AI into the physical space, including a focus on changing environments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSnap reported revenue of $1.53 billion (up 12%) in Q1 2026 and narrowed its net loss to $89 million (vs. a $139.6 million net loss a year prior).
