In his long association with the Grateful Dead<\/a>, lyricist Robert Hunter created some of the most iconic lines and phrases in the history of hippie culture. They were words he seemed born to write.<\/p>\n From \u201cWhat a long strange trip it\u2019s been\u201d in \u2018Truckin\u2019 to \u201cThis darkness has got to give\u201d from \u2018New Speedway Boogie\u2019, Hunter created some of the most oft-quoted and beloved lines for an entire generation. When your first contributions to a band<\/a> include \u2018Dark Star\u2019, \u2018China Cat Sunflower\u2019, and \u2018St Stephen\u2019, you know you\u2019ve got a long career ahead of you.<\/p>\n However, that didn\u2019t always seem like it would be the case. In his early adulthood, he was lost and in need of money. Thankfully, the CIA were cooking up an absolutely crazy MK-Ultra scheme. <\/p>\n The organisation bought the entire world\u2019s supply of LSD for $240,000. They had so much of it that they gave 297mg of it to Tusko, a three-tonne Asian bull elephant. Within five minutes, the poor beast had shit itself and died. But this beleaguered animal wasn\u2019t the only testing subject. With copious acid to administer, the CIA soon looked to enlist volunteers for testing. Robert Hunter was one of the first to sign up.<\/a><\/p>\n During that time, he met Ken Kesey, the man who would later write One Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest. Both had been attracted to the programme thanks to the fact that it offered pretty handsome payment to volunteers. But also, because they were craving something different in life, a semblance of freedom. In essence, that\u2019s what the Grateful Dead would later become: a utopian glimpse of self-functioning freedom created through culture.<\/p>\n So, when Kesey and Hunter were cut free from the MK-Ultra programme, they endeavoured to craft some inspired art. Naturally, given that Hunter had a hell of a lot to convey, it would take him a while to hone his lyrics to perfectly match the Grateful Dead\u2019s sound. As the \u201860s wore on, he grew more confident, and his contributions to the band increased.<\/p>\n It was on a cut from 1970\u2019s American Beauty, however, that contained one of Hunter\u2019s personal favourite lines. Although everyone from former President Barack Obama to your weird stoner cousin<\/a> have quoted the line \u201cLet there be songs to fill the air\u201d, Hunter keyed into another line from \u2018Ripple\u2019 that had special resonance for him: <\/p>\n \u201cLet it be known there is a fountain\/ That was not made by the hands of men.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s pretty much my favourite line I ever wrote, that\u2019s ever popped into my head. And I believe it, you know?\u201d Hunter told Rolling Stone. \u201cWe were in Canada on that train trip [the Festival Express, 1970] and one morning the train stopped and Jerry was sitting out on the tracks not too far off, in the sunrise, setting \u2018Ripple\u2019 to music. That\u2019s a good memory.\u201d<\/p>\n American Beauty was the culmination of the Dead\u2019s initial turn in commercial fortunes. After their first three experimental studio albums<\/a> failed to find an audience outside of their dedicated following, the Dead simplified the process: acoustic guitars, minimal time in the studio, and a strict eye on coming in under budget. To streamline the process, nearly all of the songs going forward would be products of a prodigious writing period for Hunter and Jerry Garcia. <\/p>\n 1970 saw the release of two albums with this philosophy: Workingman\u2019s Dead and American Beauty. For the first time in their career, the Dead actually sold a fair number of LPs, allowing them greater freedom from their record company and expanding their audience to a new group of fans who were ready to hop on the bus and join the Deadhead cult. What they found was a rich tableau of old-time Americana that could only have come from the mind of Robert Hunter.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\n
