Brighton\u2019s struggle to get the best out of Georginio Rutter means Leeds United<\/a> must be on alert to developments at the AMEX this summer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leeds are still in the market for one more wide attacker before the window shuts, with Noah Okafor<\/a> and Dominic Calvert-Lewin<\/a> already through the door. Daniel Farke<\/a> wants a creator in a winger\u2019s shirt, and one obvious candidate is already known to him intimately.<\/p>\n

That, of course, is Georginio Rutter<\/a>. Brighton paid Elland Road a club-record \u00a340million<\/a> for him in August 2024, and two seasons on, the deal hasn\u2019t delivered what either side imagined. Now, with the Seagulls\u2019 books about to get tight, the 49ers must be on alert.<\/p>\n

Daniel Farke has laid out exactly the profile Georginio Rutter fits at Leeds United<\/p>\n

After Okafor\u2019s \u00a317.25million switch from AC Milan<\/a> went through last summer, Farke was open about needing more bodies in the attack.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always room for more quality. Wingers who can work hard and are good against the ball, disciplined, wingers who are quick and good one vs one, wingers who can play like a 10. This (latter option) would be a good solution for us,\u201d Farke said, per Beren Cross<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Shortlisted names did the rounds \u2013 Dilane Bakwa, Facundo Buonanotte (who we eventually signed)<\/a> \u2013 and they fit the right-sided attacking midfielder brief. So does Rutter, though, who clocked 15 assists in the Championship under Farke and led the division for take-ons in his only full season as a Whites player.<\/p>\n

Since, the German has hardly bothered hiding his admiration of the Frenchman, either. Speaking on Rutter\u2019s late equaliser at Tottenham back in April \u2013 a goal that nudged us further from relegation \u2013 Farke pulled no punches:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know he\u2019s a fantastic player and an unbelievable human being. We\u2019re happy for Georgi, we\u2019re always happy once he scores goals and is there with good performances. We know how emotional his farewell was, and how much he appreciated and loved to play for us. Sometimes you have to accept that the player has to develop a bit quicker than we were able to do,\u201d the boss said, per the YEP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Firstly, \u201cfantastic player\u201d and \u201cunbelievable human being\u201d isn\u2019t the language of a manager who\u2019s quietly moved on. <\/p>\n

Secondly, that last line \u2013 \u201cdevelop a bit quicker than we were able to do\u201d \u2013 is a big tell for me. That\u2019s a manager who\u2019d gladly have him back at Elland Road. Farke knows Rutter was too good for the Championship then. He\u2019s not too good for us now.<\/p>\n

Brighton\u2019s awkward summer is the bit Leeds United must be all over on Georginio Rutter<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s where it gets interesting. Rutter has 11 goals and eight assists in 67 games for the Seagulls. For \u00a340million, that\u2019s not a spectacular return, to say the least.<\/p>\n

On top of that, new Squad Cost Ratio rules bite hardest at clubs without huge commercial upside, and Brighton sit squarely in that bracket. Their qualification for the Conference League makes the matter more complex<\/a> \u2013 UEFA\u2019s SCR rules cap squad spend at 70% of revenue, against the Premier League\u2019s more lenient 85%.<\/p>\n

That likely means Brighton are sellers somewhere this summer. And, a \u00a340million asset they\u2019re not getting the best out of is exactly the kind of name that could end up on the move.<\/p>\n

Worryingly for the Seagulls, Rutter himself hasn\u2019t been shy about his feelings towards West Yorkshire. Speaking to BBC Radio Sussex before his return to Elland Road in May, the forward was clear:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the fans there and me were very connected\u2026 I wait for a great welcome because I didn\u2019t leave in a bad picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Reading those quotes, I would very much doubt Rutter turns his nose up at a conversation with Farke this summer. Especially when you see his antics before, during, and after that game.<\/p>\n

Personally, I\u2019d want the 49ers checking in on the AMEX situation every couple of weeks between now and deadline day. The fit is too clean and the manager too smitten to completely dismiss him.<\/p>\n
