Despite delays, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/stockport\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Stockport<\/a> council said they\u2019re \u2018shovel ready\u2019 and waiting for final approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It has been a long wait since plans were first announced <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/work-due-start-long-awaited-34050910\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">to bring back a station<\/a> to the heart of <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/cheadle-and-cheadle-hulme\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Cheadle<\/a> with funding approved in 2022 and planning permission granted in 2023. <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/high-street-row-just-wont-33869405\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">The village <\/a>used to have a station off the high street but this closed in 1917.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The new train station, which would be built next to the Alexandra Hospital, is expected run services into Stockport, Manchester Piccadilly, and Chester. However the project has been held up by <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/calls-grow-new-train-station-33670486\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">an unresolved timetabling issue over concerns the new station could impact trains elsewhere on the network.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a aria-label=\"Click here for our dedicated Makerfield by-election newsletterLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=0c190a31-339c-45e5-9b4c-274e3c8d78bf&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Click here for our dedicated Makerfield by-election newsletter<\/a> with exclusive interviews and analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Rail North Partnership board, which oversees rail services in the north of England, met on April 15 to discuss this snag and how things could work. A spokesperson said: \u201cBoard members asked the rail industry and other parties involved to clarify several points and will discuss the proposal further once this information is received.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Despite the ongoing timetabling issues, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/stockport-council\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Stockport council<\/a> seems optimistic <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/full-steam-ahead-new-cheadle-19992673\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">the project will be going ahead<\/a> with a new transport policy stating \u2018scheme delivery will start at the station over the coming year\u2019. Living in Cheadle Heath, she said they currently faced a half an hour walk to a station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The mum told the Manchester Evening News: \u201cTo get a train is a just a little bit more of a schlep than you would like but if it was in Cheadle, it would be a 15 minute walk away. It was just make it so much more doable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI get that these things aren\u2019t just one person says yes and it happens. The buses have also got so much better over the years. We manage with what we have got but excited it\u2019s going to be much better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Others also felt the same. Megan Buk said: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s the end of the world not having one but it would be easier to have one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Julie Davies said: \u201cIt\u2019s about time. Cheadle needs a station because the nearest one is Gatley. This one would be ideal otherwise it\u2019s a bus and that takes ages and it will go out to Chester which will be nice for shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She added: \u201cThey seem to have dragged their feet as soon as the permission was there. I just want them to get on with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While the Cheadle Civic Society said the new station \u2018will bring great benefits to the village\u2019, chair Andrew Frazer remains sceptical, adding: \u201cSadly, we\u2019ve had similar project updates in the past that haven\u2019t come to anything so let\u2019s wait and see. I think it\u2019s needed and it just seems a waste that it\u2019s been there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Not everyone is convinced. Charles Hughes, who has lived in the area for 45 years, said: \u201cThe fact we are getting a new station in Cheadle when there\u2019s one in Gatley, I wonder whether it is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Pointing to buses as well as promises to extend the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/didsbury\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Didsbury<\/a> tramline, he said public transport connections were good, adding: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be against it but I do wonder if the money could be better spent on anything else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI just hop on the bus from home to Stockport then get a train into Manchester or onto <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/hazel-grove\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Hazel Grove<\/a> or Buxton. I just find the timetables that the trains run on I am quite happy with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Others say they are against the idea. Neil Ashworth said: \u201cThat station was shut in 1917. Why was it shut in 1917 if it wasn\u2019t underutilised?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a single track line going from Stockport to Chester. The roads are in a terrible state. I am a cyclist and this high street is not bad but some of the roads out and about are awful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Liberal Democrat Coun Grace Baynham, Stockport Council\u2019s Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said: \u201cWe are shovel ready to begin work on Cheadle Station. It\u2019s been a long-term ambition of the Council, Tom Morrison MP, the rail industry, Towns Fund Board, and Greater Manchester Combined Authority and we\u2019re delighted to say that it has planning permission and is fully funded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe are now awaiting approval of the timetable by central government, and are working hard to achieve this. The Rail North Partnership Board has discussed the progress of the new Cheadle station in a private meeting, to which a council representative attended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe are working on their recommendations, and we await approval in the near future. We will share more information with residents once it becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Simon Elliott, network director for rail at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: \u201cA new rail station in Cheadle will deliver huge customer benefits and support economic growth across Greater Manchester and the wider region.
