Or to dance in one of the city’s nightclubs in the 1960s? Thanks to ChatGPT’s AI image generation, you can now find out.

AI image generation has become commonplace over the last few months, with more and more creative (and sometimes controversial) ways of using it appearing each and every day.

In recent weeks, social media feeds have been consumed by other AI image trends, with users transforming themselves into Barbie dolls and Studio Ghibli-style cartoons.

Now, people are using generative AI to zip back in time, simply by asking AI tools like ChatGPT a well-targeted question.

How to get ChatGPT to take you back in time

First, go to ChatGPT and create an account or log in. Either the website or the app can be used for this.

Next, pick a time period, such as the 1950s or 1960s. Then, ask ChatGPT a question, such as, “Can you show me an image of a 1960s nightclub?”

When I asked ChatGPT to show me what a 1960s nightclub looked like, it conjured up a black and white image featuring couples dancing and sitting around a table, drinking cocktails. Men were dressed in suits and women wore long dresses and had bouffant hairstyles.

ChatGPT’s rendition of a 1960s nightclub

ChatGPT

You can then ask ChatGPT follow-up prompts to develop your image and delve further into a particular time period.

For instance, “Can you show me a colour image of a London nightclub and feature a group of female friends.” They all wore bright-coloured dressed.

chatgpt ai art time travel

When I asked ChatGPT this question, it created a Sex and the City-esque image of four women sitting around a table, with the word “LONDON” displayed in the background.

An AI generated image of a London nightclub in the 1960s

ChatGPT

What are the limitations?

Of course, it’s worth noting that AI generators are not infallible. Generative AI has been criticised for displaying both too much diversity and not enough.

For example, especially when looking at historical time periods, generative AI has put ethnic groups in places they wouldn’t have been, or displaying ethnic minorities or other marginalised groups in derogatory ways.

Christopher Miller, co-director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, expressed his dissatisfaction with a thumbs-down emoji in response to an AI-generated animation based on the Apple TV+ series Severance.

More than 400 Hollywood stars, including Ben Stiller and Mark Ruffalo, have signed an open letter urging the US government to protect copyright laws in the age of AI.

Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in London in the 1920s?
