AI image generation has become commonplace over the last few months, with more and more creative (and sometimes controversial) ways of using it appearing each and every day. <\/p>\n

In recent weeks, social media feeds have been consumed by other AI image trends, with users transforming themselves into Barbie dolls<\/a> and Studio Ghibli-style<\/a> cartoons.<\/p>\n

Now, people are using generative AI to zip back in time, simply by asking AI tools like ChatGPT<\/a> a well-targeted question.<\/p>\n

How to get ChatGPT to take you back in time<\/p>\n

First, go to ChatGPT and create an account or log in. Either the website or the app can be used for this.<\/p>\n

Next, pick a time period, such as the 1950s or 1960s. Then, ask ChatGPT a question, such as, \u201cCan you show me an image of a 1960s nightclub?\u201d<\/p>\n

When I asked ChatGPT to show me what a 1960s nightclub looked like, it conjured up a black and white image featuring couples dancing and sitting around a table, drinking cocktails. Men were dressed in suits and women wore long dresses and had bouffant hairstyles.<\/p>\n

You can then ask ChatGPT follow-up prompts to develop your image and delve further into a particular time period.<\/p>\n

For instance, \u201cCan you show me a colour image of a London nightclub and feature a group of female friends.\u201d They all wore bright-coloured dressed.<\/p>\n

When I asked ChatGPT this question, it created a Sex and the City-esque image of four women sitting around a table, with the word \u201cLONDON\u201d displayed in the background. <\/p>\n

What are the limitations?<\/p>\n

Of course, it\u2019s worth noting that AI generators are not infallible. Generative AI has been criticised for displaying both too much diversity and not enough.<\/p>\n

For example, especially when looking at historical time periods, generative AI has put ethnic groups in places they wouldn\u2019t have been, or displaying ethnic minorities or other marginalised groups in derogatory ways.<\/p>\n
