Now, 14 first-time filmmakers in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oldham\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Oldham<\/a> say they are redefining what it means to be a brown Muslim girl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The group of young woman, all in their teens, go by the name Brown Muslim Gurlz. And their documentary, titled <a aria-label=\"Unveiled VoicesLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=76202X1528180&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com%2F1178865848%3Ffl%3Dpl%26fe%3Dvl&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.manchestereveningnews.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fgreater-manchester-news%2Fbrown-muslim-girls-oldham-words-34032704\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Unveiled Voices<\/a>, explores what it means to be just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It is a film which has seen them gained widespread recognition, and earned them a nomination for a UK-wide award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a aria-label=\"Click hereLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=b8052254-66af-41f3-9dae-7bbb0e3391c6&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to get the biggest stories straight to your inbox in our Daily Newsletter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted to create a film that brings brown Muslim girls the opportunity to share their experiences in their own words,\u201d said Zenab Mumina, a 17-year-old producer who also featured in the doc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThrough conversations about identity belongings and growing up. We felt it was important to create something honest that reflects our voices and perspectives by telling our own stories in a thoughtful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Running at just over eight minutes, the film features short, punchy, interviews with members of the community and local heroes like national Taekwondo champion, Hadiya Momin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The topics range from the concepts around race and ethnicity, the importance of religion, representation and confronts the attitudes towards gender roles within South Asian society.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"14 <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While the girls could soon be reaping the rewards of their hard work which started in March last year, Zenab and fellow producer, Minahil Rizwan, also 17, told the M.E.N that they were both hesitant of the process when it began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt was a bit challenging at first,\u201d said Zenab. \u201cOur confidence level was a bit low and sharing our experiences took a bit of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cBut once we got the hang of it in the end, we felt like the space was comfortable and we were able to share our stories, experiences and self-expressions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI was a bit shy at firs with the whole idea of it being a documentary, being out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Minahil added: \u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ve ever seen a film where it was only about brown Muslim girls and their experience in society, especially in a western society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt was really fulfilling to make something new for other girls to watch and feel represented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Minahil Rizwan \" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The girl\u2019s documentary comes at a time when racial and religious hate crime is at a rise in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"Latest Home Office figures showLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/hate-crime-england-and-wales-year-ending-march-2025\/hate-crime-england-and-wales-year-ending-march-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Latest Home Office figures show<\/a> that between April 2024 and March 2025, there was a 19 per cent increase in religious hate crimes targeted at Muslims, with a drastic spike taking place after the devastating Southport murders and the riots that followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"Furthermore, Centre for MonitoringLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/cfmm.org.uk\/resource\/the-state-of-british-media-2025-reporting-on-muslims-and-islam\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Furthermore, Centre for Monitoring<\/a>, an organisation which examines the media\u2019s reporting of Islam and Muslims in the UK, found there to be a bias against Muslims in when it assessed over 40,000 articles from 30 major UK publications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The group concluded that 70 per cent of the outlets associated Muslims or Islam with negative behaviours or themes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Conscience of the conversation around the Islam and ultimately, their identity, Zenab and Minahil hope the documentary can provide some context and pushback against a rising tide of Islamophobia.<\/p>\n<p><img data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThat was a really big central theme,\u201d said Minahil. \u201cBecause everyone has difference experiences with their religion. Some of the girls wear a hijab, some of the girls don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cNone of us in the group criticize each other about it. Because we all live in a western society, it\u2019s hard. I think that\u2019s the whole point of the documentary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe idea that other people have of Islam isn\u2019t what we want to portray. We want to show that everyone has their own journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI hope that was seen through the film, but that was our idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The girls were support by staff at Fatima Women&#8217;s Association (FWA) based in Glodwick. They were stewarded by Manchester artist and filmmaker, Hafsah Naib, who is the founder of <a aria-label=\"Working Class Film School.Link opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/separes_ensemble\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Working Class Film School.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Before a camera was turned on, the group learnt about representation, identity and social issues, before applying the knowledge to make the film.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The girls were trained by local filmmaker, Hafsah Naib \" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0_Brown-Muslim-Gurlz-Oldhamjpeg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"The girls were trained by local filmmaker, Hafsah Naib \" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">The girls were trained by local filmmaker, Hafsah Naib (Image: Hafsah Naib )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They developed an understanding of cinematography, lighting, and interview techniques before applying them in their community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Speaking of the experience, Hafsah said: \u201cWe really want people to watch the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cBy watching the film, audiences will really understand about what it\u2019s like being a brown Muslim girl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about being brown, not about being Muslim, not about being a girl. It\u2019s about being all those three things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m a bit older and I remember the difficult times.
