Many politicians in Brussels are anxious about extending access beyond next summer, with any agreement being linked to the defence and security deal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/can-the-uk-negotiate-a-brexit-reset\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sir Keir Starmer is seeking<\/a> ahead of the UK-EU summit in London.<\/p>\n<p>The British fishing industry has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/french-threaten-retaliation-as-brexit-fishing-row-escalates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long felt betrayed<\/a> by post-Brexit promises and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/anger-after-france-seizes-uk-trawler-amid-post-brexit-fishing-rights-dispute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now fears rights<\/a> are going to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/fishing-row-uk-warns-france-of-retaliation-over-threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">given away again.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mike Cohen is chief executive of the National Federation of Fishermen\u2019s Organisations. They want to change that to a long-term deal on access. If that\u2019s contemplated by our government then I want them to get something in return. That\u2019s a really valuable thing and valuable things have to be paid for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the North Sea though, the view is different. Representatives of multiple EU member states say they\u2019ve seen the productivity of their fishing sectors decrease after Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>They include France, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>Bert-Jan Ruissen is a Dutch MEP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very clear that our fishermen already paid a very high price for Brexit because they lost already 25 per cent of their quota, that\u2019s a very high price so from our perspective it is clear that further restrictions cannot be accepted by the EU,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-400856 size-full lazy\" alt=\"Dutch MEP Bert-Jan Ruissen\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/FISHING-MISRA-VT_frame_4143.jpeg\"  data-\/>Dutch MEP Bert-Jan Ruissen<\/p>\n<p>The UK government said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo final agreement has been made.
