This summer, streamer <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/max\/\" id=\"auto-tag_max\" data-tag=\"max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max<\/a> will bend the knee and rebrand back to its original name, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/hbo-max\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hbo-max\" data-tag=\"hbo-max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HBO Max<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe change comes just over two years after Warner Bros. Discovery <a data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/digital\/news\/hbo-max-renamed-max-pricing-launch-date-1235532179\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/digital\/news\/hbo-max-renamed-max-pricing-launch-date-1235532179\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decided to drop HBO<\/a> from the streamer\u2019s name to become just Max. Note that while HBO and Max have carried separate commercial branding during that time, they\u2019ve competed under one \u201cHBO\/Max\u201d label for industry awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe surprise announcement, made less than two months after <a data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/digital\/news\/max-changes-logo-black-and-white-hbo-1236352161\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/digital\/news\/max-changes-logo-black-and-white-hbo-1236352161\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max tweaked its logo<\/a> to look more like the classic black-and-white HBO color scheme, was revealed at Warner Bros. Discovery\u2019s upfront presentation to ad execs in New York on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a press release, WBD said \u201creturning the HBO brand into HBO Max will further drive the service forward and amplify the uniqueness that subscribers can expect from the offering. It is also a testament to WBD\u2019s willingness to keep boldly iterating its strategy and approach \u2014 leaning heavily on consumer data and insights \u2014 to best position itself for success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/HBO-Max-Logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWBD touted its <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/warner-bros-discovery-adds-5-3-million-streaming-subscribers-q1-loss-1236390685\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/warner-bros-discovery-adds-5-3-million-streaming-subscribers-q1-loss-1236390685\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">streaming business growth<\/a>, noting the division has improved its profitability by almost $3 billion in two years, and added 22 million subscribers over the past year. The company says the streamer is on track to reach more than 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming,\u201d Warner Bros. Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav told the audience in the Theater at Madison Square Garden. \u201cToday, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWBD\u2019s naming flip-flopping for its flagship streaming service \u2014 which has caused more than a little confusion among consumers \u2014 amounts to an admission by the company it can\u2019t\u00a0be as broad as the industry leader, Netflix. The original <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/digital\/news\/why-did-hbo-max-become-max-rebranding-1235626295\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">justification for dropping HBO from HBO Max<\/a> was to signal a something-for-everyone content cornucopia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWarner Bros. Discovery president and CEO of streaming JB Perrette added: \u201cWe will continue to focus on what makes us unique \u2014 not everything for everyone in a household, but something distinct and great for adults and families. It\u2019s really not subjective, not even controversial \u2014 our programming just hits different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWith the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition,\u201d Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, said. \u201cAnd it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognized as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Turns out, Warner Bros.
