{"id":1011971,"date":"2026-06-07T22:09:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T22:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1011971\/"},"modified":"2026-06-07T22:09:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T22:09:16","slug":"european-allies-and-zelenskiy-urge-immediate-ceasefire-with-ukraine-after-meeting-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1011971\/","title":{"rendered":"European allies and Zelenskiy urge \u2018immediate\u2019 ceasefire with Ukraine after meeting \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The leaders of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uk\/\">UK<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\">Ukraine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\/\">France<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/germany\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/germany\/\">Germany<\/a> have discussed the \u201curgent need\u201d to ramp up production of defensive weapons and deep-strike capabilities after Russia fired Oreshnik missiles at Ukraine, Downing Street said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">British prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/keir-starmer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/keir-starmer\/\">Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> hosted Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy along with French president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emmanuel-macron\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emmanuel-macron\/\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> and German chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/friedrich-merz\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/friedrich-merz\/\">Friedrich Merz<\/a> \u2013 some of Kyiv\u2019s staunchest allies \u2013 at No 10 on Sunday evening for talks on the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The leaders called on Russian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> to agree \u201can immediate and complete ceasefire\u201d, with the current line of contact as a starting point for any negotiations, Downing Street said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A readout said the leaders  \u201ccondemned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a>\u2019s large-scale missile and drone attacks \u2013 including the repeated use of the Oreshnik missiles \u2013 on Ukrainian cities with a tragic toll on civilians, as well as irresponsible and dangerous Russian drone incursions into Nato territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey expressed their condolences to all the victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey discussed how to use the upcoming G7 summit at Evian, the next meeting of the \u2018coalition of the willing\u2019, and the Nato summit at Ankara to best co-ordinate further support for Ukraine based on its prioritised needs, including further pressure on Russia\u2019s war economy and an increased pledge of military and defence support for Ukraine at the Nato summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe leaders underlined the urgent need to scale up the production of interceptors and co-develop anti-ballistic missile and deep strike capabilities, and to support the future sustainability of the Ukrainian armed forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ukraine earlier said Moscow\u2019s forces had struck a nuclear fuel storage facility near the mothballed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chernobyl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chernobyl\/\">Chernobyl<\/a> power plant north of Kyiv, an incident that drew a sharp retort from the UN\u2019s atomic watchdog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Ukrainian military said a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russian<\/a> Shahed drone hit a building that is part of the central spent fuel storage facility within the Chernobyl exclusion zone. A small fire was extinguished within an hour, the Ukrainian General Staff posted on Telegram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> Ukraine had meanwhile launched a drone barrage at St Petersburg on Saturday, the final day of Russia\u2019s premier investment forum, hours after  Putin had rejected a proposal for talks with Kyiv and ahead of  Zelenskiy\u2019s meeting with European leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-atomic-energy-agency\/3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-atomic-energy-agency\/3\/\">International Atomic Energy Agency<\/a> (IAEA) said it had been informed of the Chernobyl attack and its team would soon visit the facility and inspect the damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The facility is used to provide long-term storage for spent nuclear fuel from Ukraine\u2019s operating atomic power plants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe strike caused significant damage to the facility\u2019s fuel reception building \u2013 including to the facade, windows and doors \u2013 and nearby buildings were also affected by the blast wave,\u201d the UN\u2019s nuclear watchdog said. Radiation levels at the facility remain within established limits, according to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ukraine\u2019s foreign ministry and energy ministry \u201care already working to ensure that each of our partners knows what has happened,\u201d Zelenskiy said on X, describing the strike as \u201cextremely vile\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs of now, there are no readings exceeding normal background radiation levels. But there is certainly an increase in Russia\u2019s brazenness,\u201d Zelenskiy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the IAEA, said the incident was \u201cdeeply concerning, as it occurred at a facility containing large amounts of nuclear material, held in storage just metres away from the attacked building\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2026\/03\/27\/the-500m-hole-in-chernobyls-roof-race-to-repair-damage-from-drone\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The \u20ac500m hole in Chernobyl\u2019s roof: A race to repair damage from a Russian droneOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Chernobyl incident comes a week after Moscow claimed a Ukrainian drone had hit the idled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeast Ukraine, which Russian forces have controlled since the first weeks of the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The IAEA also inspected the Zaporizhzhia site following the strike and confirmed it was a drone attack. Ukraine\u2019s southern military command denied any strikes against the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Putin had on Friday rejected Zelenskiy\u2019s call to meet and negotiate an end to the war, now well into its fifth year, which the Ukrainian president made in a lengthy open letter on Thursday that suggested Switzerland, Turkey and Arab countries as potential venues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI see no sense\u201d in holding a meeting with Zelenskiy, Putin said at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. Russia\u2019s defence ministry said it intercepted 95 Ukrainian drones overnight across more than a dozen regions.
