{"id":1012482,"date":"2026-06-08T04:32:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T04:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1012482\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T04:32:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T04:32:17","slug":"this-week-ecb-set-to-hike-rates-as-capital-markets-union-and-climate-top-the-eu-agenda-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1012482\/","title":{"rendered":"THIS WEEK: ECB set to hike rates, as capital markets union and climate top the EU agenda \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This week\u2019s agenda \u2014 at glance <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The European Central Bank is expected to raise key interest rates<\/li>\n<li>The Eurogroup and EU financial ministers meet in Luxembourg<\/li>\n<li>EU commission to present 2027 EU budget <\/li>\n<li>UN Bonn Climate Change Conference<\/li>\n<li>EU transport and telecommunication ministers meet in Luxembourg<\/li>\n<li>Informal EU defence ministerial meeting <\/li>\n<li>EU-South Korea summit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In response to recent inflation spikes, the European Central Bank (ECB) is\u00a0expected to raise key interest rates\u00a0for the first time this year on Thursday (11 June), when the governing council is meeting in Frankfurt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After keeping rates unchanged at two percent in April,\u00a0financial experts expect the bank to hike them by 0.25 percentage points three times before the year ends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longer the [Iran] war continues and the longer energy prices remain high, the stronger is the likely impact on\u00a0broader inflation and the economy,\u201d ECB chief Christine Lagarde recently said, admitting \u201cwe are certainly moving away from the baseline\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/214439\/ecb-stuck-between-a-rock-inflation-and-a-hard-place-low-growth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/e0d22c0580611e2e5eb6b52148f96e3f-600x395.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Luxembourg, the Eurogroup is also meeting on Thursday (11 June), followed by a gathering of EU ministers for economy and financial services on Friday (12 June).<\/p>\n<p>Ministers will try to advance talks on the <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/36581\/eu-wants-to-fast-track-the-capital-markets-union\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"36581\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Capital Markets Union (CMU) <\/a>\u2014 the EU\u2019s plan to connect all 27 of its national financial markets into one massive system. Progress on the CMU has been stalled for years, and divisions remain when it comes to control and supervision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the EU\u2019s six largest economies (Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the Netherlands \u2014 representing about 70 percent of EU\u2019s population) recently reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/e6-agree-capital-market-supervision-says-germany-2026-05-29\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an agreement<\/a> to aggressively push for centralised supervision of the bloc\u2019s capital markets.<\/p>\n<p>During an <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/202873\/two-speed-europe-and-made-in-eu-form-core-conclusions-of-leaders-retreat\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"202873\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">informal European Council in February<\/a>, EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen warned that if member states do not advance the long-awaited CMU this year, she will move ahead with a smaller coalition of countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet me right.
