Security Council resolutions and in line with the principles, values and legislation of the EU,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/mex_25_1213\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission\u2019s statement said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/christodulides\/status\/1922614346661728669?s=46\" target=\"_blank\">welcomed<\/a> Hahn\u2019s designation, noting that it constitutes \u201ctangible proof that the EU stands firmly and resolutely with Cyprus and its people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Multiple attempts to find a compromise settlement over the years have failed, most recently in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/un-chief-talks-to-reunify-cyprus-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland<\/a>, and formal talks have not resumed since then. This is the longest period that has passed without official dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>An informal meeting was convened by the U.N. secretary-general in Geneva in March and another one is scheduled at the end of July.<\/p>\n<p>Hahn spent 14 years as a European commissioner between 2010 and last year, overseeing first regional policy, then European neighborhood policy and enlargement talks, and finally budget and administration.
