Colour. Action. is both a major retrospective and a timely tribute to one of the great pioneers of kinetic and participatory art. Organised in close collaboration with the artist and his Atelier before his death in May 2026 at the age of 97, the exhibition spans more than seven decades of experimentation with light, movement, perception and audience engagement.

Featuring over 60 works, the exhibition traces Le Parc’s remarkable journey from his early years in Argentina and his move to Paris in 1958 through to his most recent paintings and sculptures. Throughout his career, Le Parc challenged traditional ideas of art as something fixed and passive, instead creating works that only fully come alive through the movement, participation and perception of the viewer.

The exhibition begins with the black-and-white geometric paintings and gouaches that established many of the artist’s lifelong concerns. Created after arriving in Paris, these works use repetition, optical effects and mathematical structures to create sensations of instability and movement. Patterns appear to shift, rotate and flicker before the eye, transforming the act of looking into an active experience.

It is in the galleries devoted to Le Parc’s luminokinetic works that the exhibition truly dazzles. Spotlights, reflective surfaces, transparent elements and moving structures combine to produce constantly changing fields of light and shadow. Works such as Continuous Light Mobile (1963) respond directly to the movement of visitors, turning the audience into collaborators in the artwork’s creation. Elsewhere, kaleidoscopic projections and immersive installations dissolve the boundaries between object, space and spectator.

A newly commissioned Continual Light Mobile (2026) has been installed in the entrance hall of Tate Modern’s Blavatnik Building, extending Le Parc’s fascination with light beyond the exhibition galleries and into the public space of the museum itself.

Participation remains central throughout. Interactive works invite visitors to press buttons, manipulate structures and physically engage with the artwork. Long before the rise of immersive exhibitions, Le Parc was creating environments that challenged the passive consumption of art and encouraged viewers to become active participants.

The final galleries explore the artist’s enduring fascination with colour. Using a palette first developed in 1959, Le Parc continued to investigate the emotional and perceptual possibilities of colour throughout his career. Recent wave paintings, modulation works and sculptures demonstrate an artist who never stopped experimenting, refining and extending ideas first explored more than sixty years ago.

What emerges from the exhibition is the extraordinary consistency of Le Parc’s vision. Across painting, sculpture, installation and light works, his practice remained dedicated to a simple but radical proposition: that art should be experienced rather than merely observed.

As Tate Modern celebrates the life and work of an artist who transformed the relationship between artwork and audience, Light. Colour. Action. serves as a fitting reminder of Le Parc’s enduring influence on contemporary installation, immersive environments and participatory art.

More than a retrospective, it is an invitation to look, move, play and experience art as Le Parc always intended.

Julio Le Parc: Light.
